Single of the Year

I decided to do ‘Single of the Year’ rather than ‘Music Video of the Year’ this year since some bands did not do music videos for their singles. I listed Alice In Chains’ Hollow despite it not being a radio single, but it is a digital single release for their upcoming fifth album.

Soundgarden- Been Away Too Long

Alice In Chains- Hollow

Nirvana and Paul McCartney- Cut Me Some Slack

Smashing Pumpkins- The Celestials

Mark Lanegan- The Gravedigger’s Song

Jane’s Addiction- Underground

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Brendan’s Death Song

Foo Fighters- Bridge Burning

Garbage- Blood For Poppies

Bush- Baby Come Home

  1. Lennart says:

    YES, hats off to Lanegan.

  2. Butthead says:

I would to go back to 2001 when Britney Spears was still hot and do her.

  3. Paul Kneitz says:

    Lanegan.

  4. peace_frog says:

Wait, nobody has had an aneurysm over “Nirvana with Paul McCartney? Maybe parts of the world did come to an end!! Fantasic.

  5. whisky says:

    Lanegan all the way.

  6. Abe Froman says:

    Lanegan, hands down.

Butthead, that sounds like something magic mike would say, you see where I’m going with this Brett. . . . I mean Butthead?

  7. Raj says:

I’m going with ‘Hollow’ and ‘Been Away Too Long’ second.

  8. Magic Mike Mazzarone says:

Nirvana/McCartney’s “Cut Me Some Slack” no question about it.

Been Away Too Long = Second.

    Hollow = Third.

  9. Yosef says:

i think the best single of the year is the one of Soundgarden, it sounds cool and clasic as all the soundgarden’s songs. they had preserved their own style all these year!!!
PD: i’m kinda dissapointed about the single HOLLOW cause it sounds just the same as the other AIC’s heavies songs with William as singer. i was hoping a fast and really heavy song like AGAIN or Sickman but it is really cool anyway. i love the other singles too, specially Mark Lanegan’s song. I LOVE THEM

  10. Luke says:

Didn’t you just “report” a day or two ago that AiC hollow is NOT a single?

  11. Magic Mike Mazzarone says:

“I listed Alice In Chains’ Hollow despite it not being a radio single, but it is a digital single release for their upcoming fifth album.”

We reported that it wasn’t a RADIO single. That doesn’t change the fact that it is a digital single release.

  12. NickG says:

Hollow is winning this? Really? Not that it matters or anything, but I can think of 3 or 4 songs on this list that easily top that one.

  13. Magic Mike Mazzarone says:

    It’s a great song but I can’t believe it’s winning either personally.

People were blasting about it being too “loud” the other day.

Lanegan, Sirvana, Soundgarden…all better choices in my opinion. I think it’s only winning because of the “new” factor.

  14. Steve K says:

Nope, its winning because it fucking kicks ass!!! AMAZING new AIC song!

  15. RickDeckard says:

    Hollow isn’t a single.

  16. Shadows Collide with People says:

    Gravediggers Song for sure!

  17. GwynnKatie says:

    Ha!!! I knew it.

  18. SuperSG says:

Brendans Death Song caught me by surprise, I like it!

  19. John says:

The chili peppers arent’t worth a penny anymore… This “brendan’s death song” is a joke..

A bit dispointed by Hollow at first because I found it to be too “metal” , but after relistening , it´s a decent song.

  20. Russ says:

It was a toss up between AIC and Mark, ended up with AIC

  21. Hollow_as_a_mountain says:

    Hollow and Lanegan…

  22. Mia says:

Gravedigger’s Song is definitely the best on there. It’s one of my favorites on Blues Funeral. And Mark Lanegan singing “I love you” in French is just about as sexy as it can get.

  23. Grungy says:

Not even close Been Away Too Long and the video is futuristic and also #1 it fits the beat perfectly. How they do it is beyond me, It’s just like the Blackholesun video. Been Away too long is so cool, the thing them being away too long but just needing a break. How they did it is beyond me.

  24. Elle says:

Boy!! This is a hard one, Lanegan’s Gravedigger’s Song is great but so is AIC’s Hollow, and SG’s Been Away Too Long.

  25. Ike says:

As I post this, 182 people voted for Been Away Too Long. I can’t help but ask: are you guys deaf? No diss to Soundgarden, there are plenty decent songs on King Animal, but this song is NOT good. This poll isn’t “Vote for your favorite band.” Keep it real, kids.

  26. Abe Froman says:

This feels like the MLB All-Star voting, it’s nothing but a popularity contest. I love SG & AIC, but I don’t think Been Away or Hollow can hold a candle to Gravedigger’s Song.

BUT at the end of the day, what far too many people here forget, opinions on music are 100% subjective, nobody’s wrong which makes many of the arguments on this site downright hysterical.

  27. Acid_Bubble says:

Anybody knows when this voting finishes? Thx!

  28. Staci Mott says:

How can one tell if a particular headache is caused by a bleeding aneurysm? It can be a tough call, but certain features make a ruptured aneurysm more likely. First, a headache due to a ruptured aneurysm is typically of very abrupt onset (often described as a “thunderclap”) and is classically the worst headache of one’s life. In people who already have recurrent severe headaches from other causes, the headache due to a ruptured aneurysm might feel different from the more usual attacks.”
