DAVE GROHL SAYS NIRVANA & PAUL MCCARTNEY PERFORMANCE AT 12-12-12 WASN’T A SOUND CITY PUBLICITY STUNT

Published On January 30, 2013 | By Brett Buchanan | Grunge Report, Headline, Nirvana

In a new interview with LA Weekly, Dave Grohl defended accusations that Paul McCartney/Nirvana debuting their collaboration “Cut Me Some Slack” from the Sound City film soundtrack at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy benefit concert was a publicity stunt for his film. He even said that it was McCartney’s idea to perform together at the show. Grohl said, “In those moments, I wasn’t so worried about what people were going to think. I was more worried about trying to raise some money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.”

  1. Christine says:

When Paul McCartney asks you to do something at a benefit concert *or in general, you don’t say no — just ask Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton :D

  3. Cobainsweater says:

People actually have nothing better to do than worry that the 12-12-12 performance was a publicity stunt?

  4. Adam says:

This story about the “Nirvana” reunion will just not die.

  5. Search and Destroy says:

    Kurt,..good work!

  6. kingchaz says:

  7. GwynnKatie says:

    That was funny.

  8. Deviate says:

But what does Billy Corgan think?

  9. Curmudgeon says:

I feel bad for Dave, too bad he has to deal with crap like this. First he had to deal with people saying every song he rights is about Kurt. No wonder he hasn’t done an official Nirvana reunion in almost 20 years. He probably knew people would have a fit. I don’t think he’s even played a single Nirvana song his entire Foo Fighters career not counting Marigold.

  10. GwynnKatie says:

Why should he? He’s an excellent writer, his band’s music is phenomenally popular, (back-to-back sell-out shows at Wembley) the Foos are multiple Grammy winners… etc., etc. He might go the rest of his life and never have to play a Nirvana song again. You know maybe he loved Kurt so much he doesn’t want to play any Nirvana tunes because it hurts — but that’s just my ideas and thoughts so scratch that. :::And on:::… Piles of cash, two beautiful kids, beautiful wife, record studio in his home, diversifying his career with movie and record producing… the man is a powerhouse.

Feel bad for Dave? Pish. Dave’s doing just fine.

  11. Raj says:

@Curmudgeon, That’s what the media does they put you up on a pedestal then try to destroy you. Right after Kurt died, Dave wouldn’t open up and this bothered the media so they jumped on him to dissect his lyrics.

You can’t totally blame them, whether true or not here are some pretty blatant examples:

I’ll Stick Around – the song title and the lyrics ‘how could it be
I’m the only one who sees your rehearsed insanity’. I’ve read Kurt made Nirvana practice like crazy and ‘I don’t owe you anything.’

My Hero – ‘There goes my hero, he’s ordinary.’

Monkey Wrench – ‘under pressure wind up snapping in the end.’

It could be a reach but too similar for a lot of people’s liking.
Oh and back to the article, I don’t believe this was a stunt. These guys are genuine.
