Former AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson recently had conversations with two fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers – Dire Staits co-founder Mark Knopfler and Billy Joel, for his series A Life On The Road. Here, Johnson discusses with Knopfler and Joel two funny stories, and he reacts to the huge amount of shows Joel has played, and reveals how he was stunned by a show he saw on tour. Alternative Nation transcribed their comments.

Knopfler: Of cider with whiskey chasers or something. You go on and you play, this, you know *clapping motions*

Johnson: Trained seal. *clapping motions*

Knopfler: Yeah, you know, the club secretary comes in he says: “what are you doing?” and I say that we’re packing up. He says: “you gotta get out there and do your encore, you gotta do your encore, they’ve loved you boys out there.”

Johnson also spoke to New York rock icon, Billy Joel who shared a story about his residency at Madision Square Garden.

Johnson: How many gigs is that now Billy?

Joel: We’re over a hundred gigs now – a hundred-two, a hundred-three shows at the Garden. Yet, I’m lucky, see I’m from New York, so the venue in my town is Madison Square Garden. It’s a world famous venue. I’m lucky that way, sort of like, whose the comedian, Henry Youngman who said: “my father was the town drunk, the town was New York City.”

[Johnson laughs]

Joel: I lucked out.

Johnson: I remember when I was watching you in Madison Square Garden and you started playing, New York State of Mind and had this beautiful backdrop of the New York skyline – I thought it was the start of a race or something, everybody started, I swear, they were gonna take their caps off – and everybody sang.

Joel: They showed a skyline behind us? See I don’t know what’s going on.
