Real rock music in 2013 is Alice In Chains!

  • Dennis

And Stone Sour, who this site still refuses to recognize for some reason.

  • Mia

Stone Sour are terrible! Glad the site doesn’t cover them.

  • GwynnKatie

I love you Andrei! Yes! :D

Jerry looks healthier than he has in years

  • Andrei

    Love you too, Katie!

  • Jeff Buckley

1st and 2nd SS albums were godlike… after that, just shit :(

  • Is he one?

Stone Sour used to be good… on their first album a decade ago. Mayve 2-3 songs I like from their second album.

    Since then it’s a generic alternative-metal-pop band.

And I agree with AIC here. The best bands out there right now besides AIC are SP, PJ SG, etc… sad.

  • drew

in the past 2 years i’ve seen excellent shows by my morning jacket, pearl jam, dinosaur jr, soundgarden, kings of leon, neil young with crazy horse, band of horses, mars volta, built to spill, mike watt and the missing men, foo fighters, beck, etc. etc-

not sure what jerry is thinking here………

  • Andrei

@drew most of those bands you mentioned are from the 80’s and 90’s. Jerry was referring to a new generation of bands.

  • drew

ah, neil’s actually from the 60’s!

those bands might not be from the past couple of years, but their quality of work is excellent!
not sure why other musicians care what supposedly isn’t happening in music; just be the change you
wish to see and let that speak for itself…….

my band, 2 years old, had an epic 5 hour practice last night!

  • Shoegazer

People like to rip musicians like AIC, Corgan, Reznor, etc., for expressing their disappointment in today’s music, but they’re absolutely correct. The fact that there’s a market for even the terrible 90s bands to tour & just play their popular 90s albums in full tells you all you need to know about the state of music today.

  • Jeff Buckley

There are great bands today – modest mouse, grizzl bear. Listen to sleeping ute by grizzly, fcking genius!

  • Grungeluv

Grunge will come back, just have some Patience.
After all, the AIC Boys and PJ are putting out new stuff :P

can there really be a best? everyone has different likes, tastes, etc…..

check out the graphics from the new album, the article is in Russian. However, the graphic will be Multi-Image CD case, so the reverse image of the dino skull with the original one gives DEVIL face.

Also, Jerry and Sean are talking about the meaning of the album and why they decided to pick on religion topic. Basically, they say that religious teachings are outdated and everyone is allowed to have an opposite opinion.

  • Jen

4th of July, if you seriously think Black Veil Brides is on anybody’s list of best modern bands, you really need to get out of your ’90s-and-before bubble and discover new music. There is such a thing. If you seriously can’t find a good band that released their first album in the 2000s, you’re not looking anywhere near hard enough.

  • laynelivesforever

yeah, Jerry knows something really Big and Important is missing, so he’s searching high and low.
But it’s LAYNE, man. Nothing’s the same without Layne.

  • Jacob Brown

I agree… this hippy-scene stuff needs to die off. There’s not one new band that I’ve heard and liked. Most of these shit bands make up 90% of the Coachella or Outside Lands line-ups.

Less Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, The Lumineers, Passion Pit etc etc. You get the point.

We needs some new rock shit. In the meantime, I will listen to my punk, hardcore and 90’s rock era records.

  • Joe

Jerry never said there weren’t new good bands. All he said is there wasn’t a movement. And he’s right. The rap rock thing happened in the late 90s/early 2000s and ever since then it’s been nothing but cheesy radio rock bands like Nickelback and a thousand soundalikes.

Sure you’ve got bands doing other stuff, but for the most part the landscape is overrun by a bunch of clones who aren’t doing anything other than making a pop version of what bands were doing in the 90s. There is no original sound or idea they all stand behind other than writing a fluffy riff overproduced overly-loud pop song to get on the radio.

The british invasion was a revolution. the hippie generation was a revolution. glam rock and punk were revolutions. hair metal and new wave were revolutions. grunge was a revolution. Rap rock tried to do something but altimately faltered. What has happened since then? There’s been a rise in indie rock/alternative but that was always there and known as “college rock”.

Something new simply hasn’t happened yet. And that is all Jerry was saying.

  • seattlesound

does anyone else like biffy clyro here they have made some great albums

  • Cantrello

    We’re trying Jerry, we’re trying.

Maybe he should start his own label to sign his kind of music if he wants a rock revolution so bad

  • GwynnKatie

seattlesound, Yes — I have. Actually my 20 year old daughter in college turned me onto them. They are GODS in the UK. They played here @ The Orange Peel in 2011 — Hannah went nuts, oh she talked about it for days — that and some band called Cage The Elephant. I’m not so into Cage, but BiffyC is nice – I just like their respective style. They remind me of Blue October for some reason — sometimes. I think it’s more the lead singer’s voice and not the music. Not pop music — although I suppose their stuff IS considered pop in Scotland and Great Britain.

I bet if BiffyC came to Charlotte, she’d beg me to take her there to see them, like she begged my ex to take her to CLT to see the RHCP last year… :D
Kids. Spoiling them is Expensive. But totally Worth It.

Oh — here’s a nice acoustic version of *Many of Horror*

“I’ll take the bruise – I know you’re worth it – when you hit me… hit me hard…”

Now I gotta watch the video…

  • GenXLady

These guys have lived through so much throughout the life of their band. I like that they pay respect to the past, and offer musically what they love doing in the present too. Time capsules is a good way to think of each of their albums.

I don’t think they were bashing any bands today, just saying there isn’t a clear, definable rock movement pushing the envelope today. I agree. There really isn’t in my opinion. We are due for one!

    Looking forward to this album!

  • GwynnKatie

So many things were good about this interview. Liked it.
I love that the music they are into is like a soundtrack to 1978. heh
Jack Osbourne is a good interviewer.
Sean is so droll he makes me laugh.
I love what Jer said at the end about it being a continuation of the story. I really liked that. They looked so relaxed, makes me smile.
I’m looking forward to it as well GenX, nice for you to be here. :)

  • GwynnKatie

Well yeah but it’s a tremendous fan favorite. They want to please their fans. Crowds like hearing their favorites. I’ve seen them play it with DuVall twice, one acoustic, one electric. The crowd lost it. No one was bummed to hear Alice In Chains play Love Hate Love. They loved it.
    Just saying.

There is a lot of underground bands not just commercial ones. People are consuming their content differently now. Of course a lot of people go to cock rock Festivals to listen to less than known underground bands played on the radio right? (sarca..

  • GwynnKatie

Ripping fast double bass drums, eight string guitars, six string fretless bass lines, harmonics and arpeggio scales, beautiful singing mixed up with cookie monster. That shit is FAST and loud. I believe that might be the only movement (like an undergound metal movement of sorts?), but there are so many sub-categories of speed/thrash/black/progressive/death/harmonic etc, etc metal that nobody will organize in Solidarity under one Flag.

Not in any way grunge, but would put Ginger Wildheart and Eureka Machines up against any new bands. Not that Ginger is new, but anybody I’ve ever turned the Wildhearts on to, was never disappointed. Check it out.

Tell jerry that he should wait,
3-5 years you all gonna hear about the ZORAN ROCK SCENE…

  • Raj

Cool interview, I think a movement would be very difficult in today’s day and age. I don’t think we will see something like we did in the early 90’s. There seem to be smaller movements that don’t last too long, I think it was the early 2000’s when we saw The Strokes, The White Stripe, The Hives, The Vines, Seether all come together around the same time period.

I always find that a lot of the 90’s music came from pain and angst. A lot of bands started 10 years ago or so don’t carry that in their music. Mainly I find the vocals to be the weakest part.

The only way new bands can make a living is by touring or selling DVDs since most people download their music for free. The 90’s also represented a cultural change too.

  • Abe Froman

I don’t think there ever will be another ‘revolution’. Radio (and MTV in the ’80s & ’90s) played huge roles in past musical movements. But that was when there were true rock stations on the radio, and MTV played videos & had shows like Headbangers’ Ball (I used to love that show)

Now MTV has shows about pregnant teenagers and all the rock n’ roll stations in my city have been replaced by easy listening & pop crap.

The internet, especially youtube & file sharing has changed the whole game. I just can’t see a style or genre of music coming out of the woodwork again & having as much of an impact as some of the movements of the past.

  • Abe Froman

As far as good music out there right now, Tomahawk is still making awesome Rock N Roll, and John Stanier’s other band Battles is phenomenal, I can’t get enough of the albums “Gloss Drop” & “Mirrored”. (while those albums aren’t new, they are from the last decade!)

laughing is good for the soul.

reality is gonna be harder tho.

  • Nicb115

Gotta love jack white he is the only “new” real rock star of the 2000’s. The white stripes, The Racountours, and The Dead Weather are all amazing and so different from each other.

  • Scott

There are lots of bands and new artists but they are mostly doing their own thing and not part of a movement. Many don’t even fit under one genre or sub-genre and that’s cool. Also, they can do different kinds of songs the same year and don’t worry about what people think too much.

  • DarkDragon

I remember all the cool music my local alternative station played in the 90’s and now they are playing stuff like that “Some Nights” song by Fun. Just, utter, cringyworthy garbage.

  • EvenFlow

Music has not really evolved since the early ’90’s, Everything went digital and so commercial, in all walks of life, bigger better and easier. Tehnology has a lot to do with the shit music and shit bands. Bands copied, ripoffs everywhere. Didn’t live the life experience to write about it and feel it. It wasn’t real.

Musicians don’t have to pay their dues anymore, don’t have to sell records out of their cars anymore. Fucking a lot of new bands don’t even write their own music.

Black keys did something different, they’re cool
Jack white is super fucking kick ass
Some of that garage rock stuff was different and cool. The strokes

But there is so much shitty music out there I just listen to the Stones, then Pearl Jam, then Zeppelin then Alice in Chains. Rotate late 60’s early 70’s rock and “Grunge”.Best fucking playlists ever (I hate that word)

I get the feeling with technology the way it is, and things happening like all those F’N reality singing shows, that there might never be another ‘revolution” in my time. I can only hope there is though. For now, Im just really happy that band that I loved in high school are still putting out music. Sometimes against all odds, but here they are. Which is good for us fans. And just maybe they will help inspire then wave, or even a couple of band that we will get to enjoy. Even bit helps.

  • Peace Frog

Was an off shoot of this site supposed to happen. Id love to see bands like Middle Class Rut and Red Line Chemistry covered. They are not grunge, but they both sound very grunge influenced. MC Rut like a Janes Addiction/RATM, and Red Line Chem certainly has some AIC influence(a little Maynard in the guys voice at times as well). They even covered Nirvanas “Polly” which sounded really good to me.

When might we see a site, or area where we can talk about these kind of bands? Even adding a forum here would be nice. Keep us up to date please.

  • GwynnKatie

I believe Brett said recently that it was coming soon Peace Frog.
Just some technical snafus to have to be smoothed out or something like that. The music industry has sure declined – true.
Especially for the livelihood of the musicians making the music.

  • NiceNcleaN

No more quiet keep to ourselves movements that just build then explode. No secrets anymore all out there for ANYONE to do and there is such a saturation of the same sounds that many people love. They are content and seem happy the WAY IT IS.

Those expecting what happened in the late 80s to mid 90s to happen now should also expect the BIG BAND era to become popular again.

  • Anthony

If these guys as well as many others are so disapointed in any new revolution being non-existent maybe they should do something about it. How about reaching out a hand to any of the unsigned bands out there? We all know there are many. If you dont know any get off your ass and look. Record companies arent going to. You want a revolution? Start one.

  • Peace_frog

As much as I would like to support what you said Anthony, it’s just not even close to that easy. There is so much more than just lending a hand. On a very simple level, AIC(etc) could try to get recognition to a band by way of the internet or interviews. But I think most other ways would be very costly and not time effective to the established bands trying to start this revolution. There is a reason why labels seem to ‘own’ most bands, and not bands can afford to get out on their own. Getting into costs- anything from starting a label, or just helping with recording cost, helping to put an album out independently, marketing costs……out of pocket $$ is loads.

I agree that some of these bands could certainly do more to bring attention to a few bands, but they probably just cant do a lot more than that.

  • Red

Recently all I have been able to think about is how the world needs another music revolution of sorts. I compleatly missed out on all of the others and now all anyone my age listens to is total garbage! No one knows good music, or songs with actual meaning I need another revolution!

  • Peace_frog

RED- Why dont you think that? It sounds like you have a clear understanding of what is good music to YOU. You can either turn you friend on to it, or say fuck them, because you are doing fine. You dont need your all of your friends to support your music choices. Ill be the first to say it helps if your friends have some of the same musical taste. But I can also tell you a little story of how I lost a BEST friend over music. Long story takes longer of course, but the short of it is that I got into all of her music, and she shit on mine. She ended it because I finally said ONE thing like “Ive listened to anything you said, and you wont even try this, you just say you already know you hate it”. It was the first time I even spoke up to her, and she hated it. That was the end. Doubt thats your situation, but Im just saying, love what you love. Dont wait for your friends to also like it, and if they never do, enjoy it anyways. It also sounds like you dont like their musical taste either. No revolution will change that.

Sorry so long. I think your friends probably do listen to shit. Try expanding their taste, but dont lose sleep over it.

  • Red

@Peace_frog tried that all that happened is that they act like they live it but never listen to it on their own and they don’t really get it you know. To them it’s justly music, when it is so much more its MUSIC!

I understand you completely my friend. When you love music you want to share it, and more importantly you want that love to be shared back with you. Then bond of music is great between friends.

I will share with you a movie from the 90’s quote that applicable to this.

John Gustafson: Pop, I wish you’d try the low-fat bacon.
Grandpa Gustafson: Well, you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which gets filled first.

  • Peace_frog

From the same movie, although it doesnt seem like it has the meaning…Just live your life. Eat your bacon, and fuck what people say. There are no rules. Just be happy.

Grandpa: What the… what the hell is this?
    John: That’s lite beer.
Grandpa: Gee, I weigh ninety goddamn pounds, and you bring me this sloppin’ foam?
John: Ariel’s got me on a diet because the doc said my cholestorol’s a little too high.
Grandpa: Well let me tell you something now, Johnny. Last Thursday, I turned 95 years old. And I never exercised a day in my life. Every morning, I wake up, and I smoke a cigarette. And then I eat five strips of bacon. And for lunch, I eat a bacon sandwich. And for a midday snack?
    John: Bacon.
Grandpa: Bacon! A whole damn plate! And I usually drink my dinner. Now according to all of them flat-belly experts, I should’ve took a dirt nap like thirty years ago. But each year comes and goes, and I’m still here. Ha! And they keep dyin’. You know? Sometimes I wonder if God forgot about me. Just goes to show you, huh?
    John: What?
    Grandpa: Huh?
John: Goes to show you what?
Grandpa: Well it just goes… what the hell are you talkin’ about?
John: Well you said you drink beer, you eat bacon and you smoke cigarettes, and you outlive most of the experts.
    Grandpa: Yeah?
John: I thought maybe there was a moral.
Grandpa: No, there ain’t no moral. I just like that story. That’s all. Like that story.

  • Red

    Ha nice
I don’t want them to adore the exact same music as me, but I’m dealing with 15 yr olds of the 21st century I’m up a creek without a paddle here… Before me they didn’t even know Nirvana.. NIRVANA I’m not a die hard fan but i mean they were/are really popular and it’s Nirvana…

  • Peace_frog

Sometimes it’s ok to live life, and like the story. Exactly like music. No to people are the same.

  • Red

    What movie is this?

  • Peace_frog

See, you are trying to hard. If they never like nirvana, it will bother you. Why? YOu like them right? Go fucking listen to nirvana. They might be on a web site saying they think your music sucks. Who is wrong? Nobody. Id love to say they are, but we cant choose. Not for them. You say you dont want to to adore the same music as you. But then you go on to show you are a bit agitated that they like some bullshit, and have no interest in the music you find important. So I would say it IS important to you that your friends like what you like. If not, move on.

Maybe you can can dig this “Im so happy, cuz today I found my friends, their in my head”………you do have friends, but the ones you have, might just never have respect for what what you like. But, the for the most part, the rest of us do. You are in good company and I hope you will stick around here. We support you. Dont worry about your friends, they might just come around. If not, find what you already like about them. Music doesnt seem to be one of them right now.

  • Red

My friend advertised herself as someone with music taste like mine. Only for me to discover she didn’t know the good bands, or any at all . I have an odd habit of judging people based on their taste in music..
So the really, truly irritating thing is that they pretended to like something they knew nothing of and music is more important to me than anything aside from family. So when they listen to music that is flat out stupid I can’t tolerate them. And the “friends ” I have, suck.
I will stick around, everyday and twice on Sundays.

  • kingchaz

1.) The industry has changed- too many download, rather than getting the tangible copy,
2.) Society has changed- people are impatient and want what they want NOW, again, rather than getting the tangible copy,
3.) Record companies overproduce “pop,” undersell what’s underground- punk and hardcore started off underground, it will take time,
4.) Society has nothing to be “against,” in the 50s and 60s it was manners and ideology, in the 70s and 80s it was war and Communism, in the 90s it was corporate greed. Now, everyone gets what they want when they want it, they have what they want at their finger tips instantaneously.

Music comes from soul, which comes from a struggle for freedom or identity. This generation doesn’t know what those things are because they never lost freedom, or searched for identity.

  • kingchaz

A lot of the new musicians don’t have to work for what they have, and will settle for what little they get. It’s just how society is nowadays. A chorus of mediocrity.
