Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan discussed Guns N’ Roses and Axl Rose in a new interview with Joe Rogan.

“I would argue, and I don’t mean this in a disparaging way, I would argue that the freedom in Axl and the path that they took has added to the brand.”

When Rogan criticized Rose’s 2000’s work, Corgan defended him.

“I would argue differently, I think that when you look, and I’m speaking as a fan now, when I look at Axl Rose, I see a free person. That means more to me than whether he did the right thing in 200X. I am more interested in that.”

Rogan asked, “So you like the fact that he didn’t give a fuck, and he went crazy?”

Corgan responded, “I love that about Axl Rose. I love that he doesn’t give two fucks about any of it, I think that’s so fascinating. There are only a few American iconic artists that are truly free. So it’s like, was Hunter S. Thompson free? We only have a few of those people. Jonny Cash had some weird bad years, was every year of Jonny Cash perfect, was every year of Neil Young perfect? It’s the sum total of what that person represents that I think is the durability. As fans, we get into, ‘I don’t like the new song. I think that misses the mark.’ There’s only one Guns N’ Roses in the whole world.”
