After suffering the tragic losses of icons like Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, and Kurt Cobain, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan believes Grunge is primed for a comeback. He discussed the topic in a new Instagram story Q&A.

Do you think punk/grunge will make a comeback?

“Yes.”

Do you believe rock and any sub genre is dead in today’s world?

“No longer, no. I once did but no more.”

How do you feel about modern music?

“Improving, and fast.”

Any advice to new bands?

“Ignore everyone’s advice. And I do mean everyone. Mom Dad Friends GF’s BF’s and HIPSTERS.”

Will social media be the death of us?

“You can’t die if already dead.”

Corgan praised Halestorm and Chelsea Wolfe as part of the next generation of Grunge style rock in a new Instagram post.

“Friends, this is Lzzy Hale @officiallzzyhale of the band Halestorm, who performed with us the other night on ‘Stairway to Heaven’. She is not only one of the best singers in the world today, but I rank her with the best that I’ve seen and known. Her band just put out a new album (Vicious), and I strongly encourage you to give it a listen. They are a band that has, over time, put the pieces together the old-fashioned way, through incessant touring and hard work. And what is so exciting to me is I recognize Halestorm in the tradition that @smashingpumpkins came from; call it classic rock or grunge-y or whatever.

We simply need to support young bands like this if rock is once again gonna square off with and slay the ubiquitous, never ending squeal of p-p-pop. And last bit: for years I walked around thinking alt-rock had seen it’s best days, which is fine in a selfish way but I was dead wrong. It’s coming back, and coming back strong. And there are moments to push and support these artists, and this is one of them. Don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself. There’s so much exciting, young and fresh music out there like @deafheavenband @drabmajesty @cchelseawwolfe @coldcave23 @myrkurmyrkur.”
