Former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl discussed the Seattle Grunge scene in a new PBS interview. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.

“Now it’s just the touch of a button, and some kid in his basement can let the world hear his latest masterpiece that he recorded in his bathroom. I think that’s amazing. That’s the kind of independence and distribution we dreamed of when we were kids.

As far as it sort of changing the regional aspect of things, I don’t think so, because I do think there’s still different accents, and there’s still different flavors, and there’s still different tempos. Go spend a good winter in Seattle. That oppressive, grey drizzle. I mean it completely messes with your psyche, and if you’re a musician, your shit is going to get dark (laughs). It just will.”

He also said about Foo Fighters, “Nobody told me what to do back then because nobody cared what I was doing. Now, still, nobody tells us what to do because we’ve just built this sort of fortress around our band so it’s protected by us.”
