Dave Grohl discussed his Saturday Day Night Live experiences with Nirvana in 1993 and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1994 in a new video for SNL’s YouTube channel.

“I remember doing promos with Charles Barkley. I can still hear his voice go like, ‘Hi, I’m Charles Barkley, with Nirvana.’ But the crazy thing is that he was shorter than our bass player. Novoselic is 6’7, and that kind of blew us away.”

He also discussed how Tom Petty’s camp reached out to him in 1994 months after Kurt Cobain’s death.

“I was actually in the studio recording what became the first Foo Fighters record, it was just me messing around in a studio at first. I got the call, and someone said, ‘Hey, Tom Petty wants you to play drums with him on Saturday Night Live. I was like, ‘Really, he couldn’t find a good drummer that would do it?’ So I was like, ‘Okay.’ I rehearsed with them, he was the sweetest guy in the world, it was so much fun, the Heartbreakers were the sweetest band. Everyone was so nice.”
