MIKE MCCREADY SAYS PEARL JAM OFFICIALLY BEGAN WORK ON NEW ALBUM LAST WEEK

by -

From OC Weekly:

In a phone interview last Friday, guitarist Mike McCready told the Weekly that Pearl Jam has officially began work on its tenth studio album. “We started yesterday,” McCready said. Contrary to other reports, McCready said the band began work on the album only Thursday last week. He confirmed that the Seattle quintet has started to flush out demos internally and will be working with longtime producer/collaborator Brendan O’Brien on the record.

So many conflicting reports on the stage of the album.
I was hoping we would have new PJ and SG this year…. maybe not!

  • http://www.cryojenx.com Crystal Walters

Cool news. I so do hope that this one is a little longer and less pop oriented tho.

  • Andrei

Thank God they’re doing it with Brendan! There’s no better producer for them!

  • dj

they have not been done a great album since mid-90s….

  • DownUpSide

It better not be Backspacer Part 2. Ole doesn’t give me much hope for it though.

  • Jamie

So pumped for this! loved Backspacer and can’t wait to see what PJ does next!

  • billy

@dj Both Yield and Riot Act were terrific albums. Avacado and Backspacer had a few meh songs. you won’t get an argument from me on Binaural tho (theres only about 4 songs on that album that i still listen to today)

i totally agree with @CrystalWalters that the album should be longer tho

  • be

VERY COOL.. PEARL JAM FUCKING AMAZING :)

  • Electric Fun

    complain complain complain complain complain

  • be

    EDDIE VEDDER IS GOD :)

  • Robin

    less pop, more PUNK!

  • Aza

Their art is their art. In real life, Eddie Vedder is actually one big douche bag.

  • dennis

Aza, why don’t you enlighten us about your personal relationship with Mr Vedder. Obviously, you know him quite well to come to this conclusion. Please, do tell!

  • ed

less pop, less punk… more ROCK!

  • dj

I feel disappointed by every PJ album since mid-90s…

  • Marcelo

I hope a combination of Yield and Versus guide their thoughts and impulses towards a audible album. Backspacer is so boring, not inspiring at all…. in other words, Backspacer and Avocado are soul-less.

  • drew

    we’ll see/hear somewhere down the road…….

in the meantime; dj; how many albums do YOU have out? billy; the use of “meh” as a description is quite
weak in of itself……..how about fucking terrible, horrifically horrible, something with some impact!

not thats i feel that way, i love all pj’s work……some more that others, but as i mentioned to dj; how many
    records do you have out?

  • Alec

Fingers crossed for a grunge album. (Ten/VS.)

  • Craigory52

@Billy I agree with you about Binaural. Only about 4 songs I like on the album. It’s the only album I don’t care for. Vitalogy, Vs., and Yield continue to be my favorite PJ albums. I like Backspacer but I agree with those on Ole. It’s a fun song but it’s nothing to brag about. Sounds like a leftover from Backspacer. I don’t mind experimentation as long as those songs are good. Backspacer had such crisp and clear production that makes it really enjoyable and the songs were all good. I didn’t like the muffled production of Binaural. Hoping for a rock album with a little experimentation with clear production and memorable songs.

  • Craigory52

Oh I’m also hoping for less punky songs. They always put out good punk rock songs but they’ve been having the same beat and I’m hoping for some diversity in tempos.

  • BlownUpWorld

I realize that everyone has their own tastes but all the criticism about the “newer” PJ albums baffles me. I think all of their albums are very good. I mostly listen to their live boots, but when I occasionally pick up a studio album, I’ll pick up Binaural, Yield & Avocado just as often as 10 or Vs. And Backspacer has some great songs (Supersonic is as good as almost anything in the PJ catalog, IMHO). Having said all that though, I’m a lot more anxious to hear new Soundgarden & Mudhoney.

  • GrungeAttack

drew how many records do you have out? Lets hear your voice on those hits.

See how easy that was. Why do people feel that others can’t like there band. They pay for the records and if they feel that some are not as good as others who cares if they are not pros there fans. The ones who make it possible for these musicians to live very good life’s.

Pearl Jam like most bands have some average songs and some great ones. They have been doing it for a while so of course it is going to happen.

2013 for new Pearl Jam since they would have to rush it to make 2012 and why rush it. Same thing with Soundgarden take your time to make a great album, than rush out a bunch of junk.

I ain’t got words for what goes on
I ain’t got words for all that’s wrong
    What do you say? Meditate
    Meditate, Ole!

  • The Incredible Mr. Mark Arm

fuck the people that thinks that Binaural is their worst album. best album of the 00s

  • http://myspace.com/esbthemongrels eric

i agree about binaural. they had 2 albums really. the stuff that was binaural & at least 12-13 other songs. i hope that’s the creative approach stone was talking about! the atmosphere of that time, i actually like my “binaural 2″ mix better. anything in between, puzzles & games, sad, hitchhiker,in the moonlight, education, fatal, sweet lew, strangest tribe, driftin’,foldback, harmony & thunderclap. the original mixes from the demos. KILLER shit!

they should reissue no code/yield & FINALLY release the alpine boots/dvd to tide us jam heads over.. my favorite record other than binaural is vitalogy & a double b-side record from the 91-94 period that i titled “embryonic stage”. gremmie.net has everything that you need. they’ve got lost dogs and, demos anything you can think of. ORIGINAL brother, hold on, alone, girl & every show avaliable up to 06.
pearljambootlegs.org is great. oh yeah, there’s this actual movie from ’95. THE BEST PJ FOOTAGE EVER!!!

i’m hoping for a return to 00/94 period pj. we’ve never heard a mix of records & those 2 are KILLER. there’s always something they can drop, so hopefully, they’ll release that e.p. or maybe they scrapped it. can’t wait for the new SOUNDGARDEN, either. i do miss dave a. for pearl jam. i love matt cameron & when he joined it made pearl jam complete, finally. if they can make another binaural or riot act- a mixture of those two with vitalogy type shit thrown in. riot act is one of the most overlooked records, ever. hard to believe that it’s 2012. that record will soon be 10, thats probaly the reason behind the record store day love boat captain(?) single. i’m praying that they put out the reissues, but probably not….ramblings from a stoner…more shoes-shoe for my friends… listening to indio ’93 (the shoe show” killer shit..

  • slatesphanboi

‘I was hoping we would have new PJ and SG this year…. maybe not!’

The Beatles and the Rolling Stones tried to not release ‘competing’ albums during the same year. Didn’t want to jam up the market-place.

Hopefully PJ, SG, and AIC are thinking along those lines so we can get like 3 albums like over three years, that would be cool.

  • Bama_Grunge

I think I’m the only person who likes the last two albums. ‘Amongst the Waves’ is one of my favorite PJ songs in their entire catalog.

  • Scott

Mike didnt specifically say they just began working on the album. The writer did! The writer of the article obviously completely misunderstood Mike! And obviously didnt know about their studio session last year! Mike just said they started on Thursday. He clearly meant that they just got back together again in the studio. He meant they just started demoing songs for this second studio session. We already know they have 7 songs in the can. It all depends on how well this second session goes. If they manage to finish a few more songs this time around the record could be done. If not then they will have to have a 3rd session some time in the future.

  • Rodrigo

i’m tired that o’brien still produces the albums of the same bands that he produced 10 years ago, pearl jam now has to be a bit more risky about their music and call a producer that could probably do a better job for example BOB EZRIN that would be FUCKING CRAZY

  • 2012 MAYAN CALENDAR

HEY I KNOW LETS HAVE A RACE :) LETS SEE WHICH 90S ALTERNATIVE ROCK BANDS ALBUM WILL COME OUT FIRST IN 2012

    PEARL JAM?
    SOUNDGARDEN ?
    STONE TEMPLE PILOTS?
    ALICE IN CHAINS?

    OR GREEN DAY?

ONLY THE MAYAN GODS KNOW FOR SURE (:D

  • slatesphanboi

‘pearl jam now has to be a bit more risky about their music and call a producer that could probably do a better job for example BOB EZRIN that would be FUCKING CRAZY’

That would actually be like real interesting.

Maybe PJ could go back to their HARD ROCK Vs. sound with like Bob Ezrin, that would be totally sweet!

Or like maybe get like Butch Vig, why not?

  • Ale

My opinion is that Eddie Vedder is not a goood songwriter and he is so boring…Pearl Jam is the least interesting thing come out from Seattle…

Melvins, Mark Lanegan, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden are more exciting and interesting

  • 2012 MAYAN CALENDAR

I REALLY THINK THAT IF PEARL JAM ADOPTED A MORE ROCK OPERA APPROACH :)
THEY COULD MAKE A SUCCESSFUL NEW GRUNGE ALBUM THAT COMBINES ELEMENTS OF GREEN DAYS AMERICAN IDIOT AND 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN PLUS THE PUNK ROCK ELEMENTS OF NIRVANA AND MUDHONEY, SONIC YOUTH, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN??

TIME FOR SOMETHING GOOD , ORIGINAL AND FRESH TO COME FROM PEARL JAM

  • Cath

@2012 Mayan Calendar – Are you seriously saying you want Pearl Jam to become more like Green Day?

    The mind boggles.

  • Scott
  • 2012 MAYAN CALENDAR

Yes because at least Green Day rock , Pearl Jam have become always pop in a way , their last studio album backspacer was way too melodic, but it didnt have the depth and volume and serious lyrics that green days last two epic albums : american idiot and 21st century had .

  • The Incredible Mr. Mark Arm

lol green day sold out a long time ago

  • Cath

@2012 Mayan Calendar – You really were being serious?!! I think what you’re after here is a Nickleback album. And I think I speak for almost everyone when I say – none of us want that.
