Pearl Jam have posted the following on their website:

Pearl Jam’s new track from their forthcoming album on Monkeywrench/Republic Records is out now!

“Can’t Deny Me” was co-produced by Pearl Jam and Brendan O’Brien. The track was recorded in Seattle last month and released as a surprise early download to Ten Club members last Saturday.

Eddie wrote the song’s lyrics set to music written by Mike. Jeff created the single’s artwork in collaboration with PJ’s longtime Videographer, Kevin Shuss.

“Can’t Deny Me” is available now in the SHOP and via all digital download and streaming services.

Pearl Jam kicks off their TOUR of South America in Santiago, Chile today.

While the band have not discussed the meaning of the song, based on the single cover art and the band’s liberal political views, many are assuming the song is about President Donald Trump. Below are ten lyrics that appear to be insulting the President of the United States.

1. And now you want me to breathe, And be so grateful

2. You may be rich, but you can’t deny me

3. You can’t control, and you can’t deny me

4. Your eyes are sick, you’re sick and evite

5. You try to talk down to me, my mind it ain’t so simple

6. Where’s your vocabulary, your ignorance is sinful

7. You plant the liar’s seeds, Watch as your ruse take hold

8. The country you are now poisoning, condition critical!

9. You got nothing to hide, let the bullshit walk

10. We see right thru you, and you can’t deny me!

The band contributed “Obey The Law Of The Heart” to the Basmati Blues soundtrack last year but it didn’t feature Eddie Vedder on lead vocals, it was largely a Stone Gossard creative vehicle.

Pearl Jam’s last album was 2013’s Lightning Bolt. The band are set to tour South America, Europe, and North America this year. Listen to a clip of “Can’t Deny Me” below, and listen to the full song on PearlJam.com if you are a Ten Club member.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by Cant Deny Me?

    • gdminority02

No, I think this band should hang it up while they still can.

      • John

They’ve become so formulaic, on this song in particular just feels like they’re dialing it in.

      • Stone Gossardish

Just do us a favor and don’t buy any tickets, and tell your friends not to buy any either. It’s too damn hard to get em as it is these days.

    • Stone Gossardish

No, though it will sound better & more guitar driven when played live. I’m neither under nor overwhelmed by it. More encouraged that it was even made.

    • Corndog

      No. It was awful.

  • Olga Stewart

corndog and StoneGossardish, this news should make you both happy. :).

    • Corndog

It really does! It’s about time:)

I just hope Can’t Deny Me isn’t indicative of the album as a whole though because that song was terrible. Not quite Evacuation level terrible but it was still pretty bad! Fingers crossed!

      • Stone Gossardish

I have it a couple levels over Evacuation, which is just a D level Pearl Jam song at best. Nothing takes the momentum out a show like that clunker.

        • Corndog

Yes it’s definitely better than Evacuation but I’m still not overly impressed. When they released Mind Your Manners before LB I was excited for the new album but with this one the best I can manage is cautiously optimistic:)

          • Stone Gossardish

I think that’s fair. Manners was a real sign of hope and the record delivered. Should it have been 2 records? Probably, but Manners was good. This single is not as good.

When I first heard a clip of WWS I thought “oh my god, that’s pretty fly for a white guy,” so hopefully this tune gets better like WWS did.

        • John

Add cropduster to that list of momentum killers

          • Stone Gossardish

Fortunately it’s not played often. It sounded good on the MSG DVD and it’s been played okay, but I think that song’s been pretty much retired.

There are other songs that need a solid rest. I always hope they play their best songs live, which they come closer to doing than just about any band, but it would be nice to see some fresh laundry over the next few years and Cropduster isn’t one that needs to be cycled. It’s already peaked.

      • John

I’d say cropduster, the fixer and evacuation bad. I’ve given it 5/6 listens even with the gorilla glue and it’s just not that good. I’m hopeful for a new record but this song just isn’t very likable. On another note, I know they like Brendon O’Brian but I merhinks he’s part of the stale sound as well. Regardless, a clunker here and there really doesn’t take much away from why we all love PJ

        • Corndog

I’m not overly keen on Cropduster but I quite liked The Fixer.

I’m not sure what you meant about gorilla glue. Can you explain?

Regarding Brendan O’Brien, they’ve made some really good music with that guy so I’m not sure if he’s part of the problem or not. I can understand how using the same producer over and over again could make your sound stale though, and that’s exactly what this song is. It’s a new Pearl Jam album though, so I’m hopeful. Have to wait and see I guess.

          • John

Gorilla glue is a very very nice strain of the green, 420, etc…

          • Corndog

Ah, fair enough:) I’m actually having a few J’s right now and watching some live Pearl Jam on the tube of you:) Always seems to make music that much more enjoyable!

          • John

            Indeed …. jam on, friend

        • Michael Dolce

cropduster is actually one of the best off Riot Act IMO. Evacuation is a
fun song if you’re a drummer 😛 Fixer is pretty bad pop punk. A lot of
the stuff they’ve put out over the past few years has been in that vein. I think BoB is DEF part of the problem. The stuff he’s worked on in recent years aside from PJ has been very polished and meh. Oh well, at this point, ill be cautiously optimistic at best

          • John

I don’t mind cropduster on the record but live it absolutely kills any mood or momentum that had been going

      • Olga Stewart

        :).

        • Corndog

Hi Olga! Just the person! I just turned 40 like 3 hours ago and it’s put me in a state of depression. You’re always so nice, genuinely so, so if anyone can cheer me up a little it’s you! Do you have any words of wisdom to help ease the sting of middle age?

          • Olga Stewart

            Happy birthday to you. *HG*

And thank you for your kind words.

As for being in your 40s?

For me, I have gained more wisdom, had a lot more laughs, have felt a lot calmer, and have found it easier to both speak my mind and be myself.

Do hope that both makes sense and that it helps.

Lastly, I hope that you have a marvellous birthday day. :).

          • Corndog

Thanks Olga! I don’t know about wisdom, I’m still waiting on feeling like I’ve actually grown up:) It freaks me out. Just feels like yesterday I was 20. Perhaps I’ll get the hang of this whole grown up thing someday!

          • Olga Stewart

            You are most welcome. :).

          • Olga Stewart

Oh and when you are in your 40s and you have a bad hair day?

Well, hats come in quite handy at this particular time. :).

          • Corndog

I’ve got a double whammy there. I’m going grey and I’m starting to lose it! I’ve been experimenting with shaving it. I had a mohawk for the better part of last year:) I think I’m having a mid life crisis! If only I could figure out how to get my hands on that Porsche….

          • Olga Stewart

            Ha ha!

          • Olga Stewart

            I do like mohawks.

But I’m not sure what would happen to it if you drove around in a Porsche with the windows down. :).

          • Corndog

            I’m willing to risk it:)

          • Olga Stewart

            Heh!

      • Michael Dolce

Yeah and Im surprised Mike wrote the music. He usually writes really heavy songs both in PJ and Mad Season. It’s grown on me since the first listen, but yeah… uh… worried?

  • Stone Gossardish

We knew there was something left in the tank. It’s partially sad how it all came together with a tragedy that changed the course of their lives, but hopefully that will lead to even more fresh vigor than we saw in the first half of the Bolt record.

  • Samsoni

It’s sad that at least in my opinion, there sound has become obvious. I predicted this new song was going to be on the same surface with that ‘lightning bolt’ noise.

    • Michael Dolce

i think you hit the nail on the head. ‘Surface’ – everything they’ve done the past 3-4 records felt surface level. EV especially. Oh well – remember the good times!!!

  • No Code

Brendan O’Brien again………………… For fuck sakes!!!!! This guy is singlehandedly killing Pearl Jam! Why….. I mean WHY do they keep using this tool! It’s like this new song I bet will rock live! Most likely because it’ll be the way PJ originally wrote it without that dick behind the mixing board. Where’s the guitars!!! Where is Matt’s drums!!!! How do you go from King Animal to this “let’s be quite and keep the beat” where the Fucking balls this band had for the first 20 years!!!!!

    • Olga Stewart

Er, wasn’t “King Animal” a Soundgarden album?

      • No Code

Yes I know it’s a Soundgarden record, I was getting at how good the drums were on that album. Matt is one of the best hardrock drummers of all time. I don’t hear it with Pearl Jam anymore.

        • Olga Stewart

          Ah kay.

          And thanks for explaining. :).

        • Michael Dolce

you are correct sir! All he does w PJ is keep time. Except on Binaural where he was allowed to bring his odd time signature stuff to many songs (Sleight of Hand, Greivance, Gods Dice, Parting Ways) Even straight forward rockers like Sad had more pop to them. And the original drum track on Puzzles and Games was KILLER! Since Avocado he’s just there to keep time. Sad.

          • No Code

Super sad!!! I guess we need to get rid of Stone because I know for a fact he’s the “just keep time” guy. Binaural is a musical masterpiece!! One of my favs, super raw, warm sounding very harvest feel to it.

          • person

I agree with everything you’re saying….Matt is of course a great drummer but he’s simply not great for PJ……he plays WAY too fast live especially…..I think Jack Irons was the best drummer for PJ

          • No Code

Dave A is mine, super cool technical drummer. So Pearl Jam if by some crazy chance you read this, My God let Matt do his thing! You have a monster sitting behind those drums, let animal out!!!!! We may be getting old like yourselves b UT we still want to rock the fuck out!!! Cheers

          • person

I also love the Dave A era no question he was fantastic! but there was something about the way Jack played & what he did with such a small kit….I just loved him with PJ….you’re right we’re all in mid-life now and personally, while I will always love PJ, I simply can’t stomach the far-left commie rhetoric from Ed….I’m quite the right-wing whacko…..oh well….sigh….Lightning Bolt had some good songs but 1/2 that record sucked to me….I haven’t seen them live since 2010 & have no plans to do so….I’d rather smoke pot in my basement & play guitar….lol https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/27ecfe72b231b06bb3ab2416f8c6eecba2b2bf820c838de48a7f1626c2b26dfb.jpg

          • No Code

Hey I hear yeah hence my user name. That’s my fav album because I was dealing with the same issues and the music just feels a story. Jack is the man and I would love him to come back. But the fact they have a kickass drummer and they keep him at bay drives me crazy. I’m not a fan of the last two albums. I like one on bolt and maybe 2 on backspacer. There are other ones on backspacer that are great but I consider them Ed solo songs

  • N.

this is about as good as “ole”

    brutal.

evacuation killed it compared to this

  • robpollard

Eh…OK. I like the ‘more cowbell’ aspect, but the vocal is not good — strained (not powerful) and not really catchy.
