Retired NHL player Chris Chelios broke the news last night in an interview with 97.1 The Ticket’s Jeff Riger that Pearl Jam will be taking a one year break. Alternative Nation transcribed the quote when he was asked about Pearl Jam possibly closing out the Joe Lewis Arena.

“You know what, no, and I’ll be the first one to say that they had a meeting about a month ago, and decided they aren’t going to go on tour for at least a year. They’re going to take a break.”

Pearl Jam are set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month. Eddie Vedder has summer tour dates booked, and Soundgarden are working on a new album and have tour dates planned.

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready discussed surviving his battles with addiction in a new interview on Art Zone with Nancy Guppy.

“I just got lucky, honestly, I don’t know what it was, because I tried for a long time, and I was not successful. I value a lot more things than I did in my 20’s. I had some great times in my 20’s, but then it didn’t work anymore. Honestly, I want to be a good Dad, I want to be a good husband, that’s the stuff that’s important to me now.

I want to be around, I don’t want to be messed up all the time. I don’t want to die that way. I’ve seen all those guys do that, and it’s not pretty. Unfortunately it still goes on and on and on, and it always will, but I feel lucky that I got out of it, and to answer your question, I don’t really know how. I got lucky.”

He also discussed Pearl Jam’s early days live.

“My mindset at that time Nancy was that this is all going to end tomorrow, so let’s have fun with this, let’s just do this while we can. I think Ed was thinking that way too, and I’ve discussed that with him. In terms of when he’d climb and do all that kind of stuff.

He would do that all the time, and it made me crazy, but I also loved it, but I thought he’s going to fall off that 100 foot [thing] that’s very greasy that he’s climbing upside down on. He did that a lot, but his mindset was this is going to end anytime, I want to do something people will remember.”
