RUMOR: STONE TEMPLE PILOTS TO BREAK UP AGAIN?

Keep in mind that these are third hand rumors from the BelowEmpty.com forums, but this source has been correct in the past regarding stories about STP. So take this with a grain of salt, but the rumor states that Stone Temple Pilots are planning on breaking up again. It could be announced sometime next year in the form of an indefinite hiatus. The band may play some spot shows, but the rumor is it stems from lower tickets sales on tour and for their self-titled 2010 comeback album, along with problems the band are having with frontman Scott Weiland. The band want to focus on being parents, Eric wants to produce and the DeLeo brothers might do session stuff for other bands.

STP reunited in 2008 after over 5 years of being apart.  The band wrapped up a one month ‘Greatest Hits’ tour on Sunday in Sacramento. Guitarist Dean DeLeo recently said in an interview he hopes the band will do a Core 20th Anniversary Tour next year, and regarding their plans next year he did not mention a new album, which STP fans have been clamoring for. He also said that the band are comfortable being a greatest hits bands and find that whenever they go outside their comfort zone it is unrewarding and fans don’t care. Scott Weiland attempted to reunite Velvet Revolver earlier this year after a one off show but Slash wanted no part of it.

As a huge fan of the band I really hope these rumors are not true and the band announce plans for a new album sometime in the next few months, but we’ll see.  A fan recently had a great quote regarding STP that really rings true.  They’re one of the best rock bands out there, they just don’t know it.  Scott, Dean, Robert, and Eric, rock needs you making music!

  • Jake

Sucks, but not surprising at all. Seems like all the guys (except maybe Scott) are content with just moving on with their lives and raising their kids and producing other bands.

It was pretty clear when the originally planned ‘Core Anniversary’ tour fell through, and there was absolutely zero talk of a new album that this was going to happen. Add Scott’s voice problems on top of that and this news kinda makes sense.

Hopefully they will do a greatest hits tour every 3-4 years or so, but I don’t think they still have enough of a spark to create another great album. I guess it’s better to burn out then fade away.

  • Brett Buchanan

    Jake,

I think the creative spark is still there, I really enjoyed their self-titled album. Maver, Take A Load Off, Fast As I Can, and Between The Lines are STP classics to me.

The reasoning also doesn’t appear to JUST be to spend time with families. It is typical band falling apart BS. If the guys actually put the BS aside and got focused, they would thrive as a veteran band.

Again, like I said in the article, my hope is this is all BS and that the band actually get back on track and make a new album and focus on the future rather than occasional greatest hits tours. I love this band.

  • Shane C

I’ll always have a soft spot for STP, but after the last year or so, I just can’t see them throwing much effort into anything new. Ever. Just a feeling, I guess.

I’ve noticed that, of all the albums, self-titled hardly ever gets played. I never have the urge to hear anything from that album.

I’d love to have new timeless tunes, that could stand up beside Tumble In The Rough, Big Bang Baby, Vasoline, ILS, Wicked Garden.

It just won’t happen. I don’t think they really care anymore.

  • nevermind

stp suck the only reason they wont make a new album is they dont give a shit about there fans only sales and money not very alternative

they have always been over rated with like 1 good song in there whole career

  • Shadow on the Sun

If they continue the way they are going then they should break up. They’re clearly not into it and it shows. Multiple late performances without apology or explanation says a lot. Just make a new album before you do boys

  • BillyL

Like I’ve said before, Scott needs to once and for all get away from the rockstar lifestyle and all that comes with it. He needs a serious change of pace if he’s even going to be able to ever continue to perform and be an artist. So, in my opinion, STP should go on an hiatus and Scott should too. As an STP fan for since Core came out, it has saddened me to see what the band has become and I would want nothing more than to see them go away for a while, have Scott get healthy, and then come back and do the STP legacy justice. But most of all, I do not want to see Scott end up like so many other artists before him. I’d rather he grew olives in Italy as a healthy man than be the singer of STP in the shape that he is in now.

  • Patrick

They have to have another album in them…

  • oscar

thats good i hope they break up and their 2010 album wasn’t even good

  • Crazies

Their last album was average! and Scott is all about the money these days..

  • Megamania

Why would you NOT want this band to break up if they’re one of your favorite bands? I hate to say it, but they’ve become a joke. They’ve become a “greatest hits” band, and the only time you hear about STP, it’s about what kind of trouble Scott is getting himself into.

  • http://www.lemonlang.net nevernamed

BYE BYE! Scott can spend his time working on christmas albums again.

  • CORE

What singer would you like to see take over for Scott?

  • Zod

The other guys have tried to go out and do other things (talk show, army of one?) and they’ve never really taken off.

They seem to come back to STP because it has some legs.

However they can only take working with Scott W. so much. On top of the drugs, it seems everytime he’s have voice problems with STP, instead of resting, he goes out does solo shows.

    I’m not suprised.

I’m not sure why bands feel the need to publicly breakup. It’s always seemed pretty lame. Just stop doing shows. Maybe in a few years you’ll want to play again.

  • BillyL

    @ Zod

In terms of STP breaking up, the headline of the article is misleading and contradicts the content which states that “It could be announced sometime next year in the form of an indefinite hiatus.”, so it should probably be changed to “Rumor: STP to Go On Indefinite Hiatus Again?”.

  • cosmicatomic

Glad I saw them for the first time, and they played a killer show AND were perfectly on time, if they do indeed break up.

Wonder what Scott will do. No STP and VR ain’t interested in him. I won’t say his solo work is necessarily bad, but it seems very much out of his comfort zone.

His solo band just seem like a bunch of enablers.

“Oh Scott, sure, let’s make another Christmas album! The 2nd one in a year, great idea!”

“Yeah, Scott! Make an album of covers and only sell it for like $25 on your personal website! This is time well spent! Let’s see how many pancakes we can stack on a rabbit’s head after we release the album!”

  • B

this is sad. i read the comments dean made about the people in the first 20 rows not responding to deep cuts, that’s probably because the hardcore fans can’t afford the first 20 rows with having to be a fan club member and paying more for tickets to be that close. i think if they played smaller venues and had general admission it would be better for them and the fans. i think they have 1 more record under contract and if they could put that out and move on to the next one, i think it would be better for them too. i think it’s holding them back and they can’t do things the way they want to.

  • Jarofchains

I thought their last album was pretty decent. I hope they put at least one more album out and than call it a day. They have left a really good catalog of songs over their career. Can’t say I really like that they are late for shows and stuff but just make the last album they are under contract for – it will have some good songs – Scott’s voice sounded good on the last album and the rest of the band sounded great as well – Huckleberry Crumble and Hickory Dichotomy were amazing songs and would of been huge hits if they were released back in STPs heyday.

I saw them back in 2000 at the HFSestival in DC at RFK and they were awesome – one of the best performances I ever saw. This was during the No.4 era – I was grateful that STP was around when I was coming of age – them and Pearl Jam were the only two “grunge” groups to put out music during my last years of high school and into college so I do feel some nostalgia and loyalty for that.

  • Andy

next time they tour, it will be state/county fairs

  • Mitch

I’m sorry, but this story is stupid. Your “source” is a known flamer on the BE boards, who attempted to start rumors of a Weiland relapse last year, and implied that Doug Grean was enabling it all(something I initially fed into, before smartening up). I usually love this site, and stand behind its articles, but this is seriously disappointing.

  • Edward R. Murrow

Let’s hope this rumor is true. Scott has turned this once great band into a joke the past 5 years.

  • Craigory52

This isn’t a surprise at all. Kind of sucks because I was hoping for a good new album because their supposed comeback album really was disappointing, except Between The Lines, Take A Load Off, Peacoat, and maybe Bagman. Besides those songs, it didn’t even sound STP. That’s too bad. Maybe if Scott can for once get his shit together. I for one wouldn’t mind a Velvet Revolver reunion but that won’t happen. Contraband was a kick-ass album and better than the past couple STP albums.

  • Anth

They should fulfill the contract with an outtakes album (Mighty Joe Young material, the ’94 “Only Dying,” etc.) or maybe a vintage live show, and call it a day. Unless they decide to seriously get their act together, the band has been given and subsequently squandered too many chances. Even though I didn’t like the self-titled album and never saw them perform, I’m glad they reunited because those first few months and all the anticipation and excitement really was a lot of fun, so it was worth it. Maybe after a few years of absence, my heart will grow fonder once again, but at this point, I’m too apathetic and I’m not alone.

  • wbcn1041

They say that their fans dont appreciate deep cuts live so they have to play the same 17 songs all tour but if they would stray from the hits and play some deep cuts more true fans would start attending and would appreciate deep cuts. When they publicly announce their shows are going to be only the hits it makes true fans want to stay away.

  • MAYAN CALENDAR 2012

I THINK YOUR ALL BASHING ON SCOTT WEILAND TOO MUCH :( THE GUY IS TRYING TO GET BACK TO SOBERTY OK??? GIVE STONE TEMPLE PILOTS A CHANCE TO COME BACK AND PLAY SOME GOOD SONGS OK?? YOU KNOW STP HAVE BEEN AWAY TOO LONG , RIGHT?? THEY HAVE SIMPLY BEEN AWAY TOO LONG, BEEN AWAY TOO LONG

    :) HAHAHA
SOUND LIKE ANOTHER BANDS HALF ASSED COMEBACK? ;)

  • MAYAN CALENDAR 2012

    :)
how about this? ;) let chris cornell join stp and scott weiland join soundgarden :)

    like rock n roll swap

  • Chris Pepper

STP is a much better live band and has a better/deeper catalogue then any band being covered on this website. Sure Scott’s an easy target but only cause he’s so good do people want to tear him down. Nirvana doesn’t exist. AIC is a covers band. Pumpkins still ok but it’s really just BC. Soundgarden was never that great just compare catalogues not even close. Pearl Jam I haven’t listened to one of there last four albums more than once. They’ve been awful for a decade.

STP blows all of these guys away today both live and with catalogue.

Saw them at Epicenter and they killed. Not sure what all this blow back is for. Eddie Vedder does a fricken ukelele album. Cornell does Scream. Layne and Kurt aren’t even around. Show some respect. Scott is a rock legend and very few can compare to what he’s accomplished.

  • Brooks

Stone Temple Plagiarists suck donkey cock

  • Creep

But they seemed so happy when I saw them a week ago….Scott even jumped on Dean’s back and got a piggy back ride…I hope they don’t break up. But in my heart I kinda know its going to happen…

Its not surprising to hear. Their last concert was shameful. Scott Weiland is the coolest guy in the world. but he is old and washed up now. Its time to shut it down and make way for the performers that actually give a shit about their fans! Scott only cares about the next rig he is going to stick into his vein.

Honestly, I am surprised I am even saying this because I have been a fan for about 18 years. But I cant deny the truth anymore. Split up STP! No one gives a shit anymore. We’ve wasted too much money on you and your OLD 2008 concert t-shirts that you are still fucking selling in 2012. BOO-ERNS!

  • Dave

I love STP’s older stuff but am I the only one who thinks that their latest album was complete suckage?

  • Dave

  • Nevermind

Hey “nevermind”……get your own name eh?

  • MAYAN CALENDAR 2012

SAY WHAT YOU WILL ABOUT SCOTT WEILAND , BUT THE DUDE CAN STILL SING, UNLIKE CHRIS CORNELL ( WHO I STILL LIKE ) BUT LATELY , HIS AGED VOICE JUST CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THE SONGS FROM THE NEW ALBUM IN SOUNDGARDEN. STONE TEMPLE PILOTS WILL CONTINUE ON YOU KNOW WHY?? BACK IN 2010, STP SIGNED A NEW RECORD CONTRACT WITH ATLANTIC RECORDS FOR $ 100,000 FOR 5 MORE YEARS. SO THEY ARE LEGALLY AND FINANCIALLY OBLIGATED TO PRODUCE MORE WONDERFUL ALT ROCK ALBUMS :) LIKE 2010S FIRST KISS ON MARS

  • lilrockable

Damn, i really hope this is not true. I really enjoyed the self titled album, and have yet to see them live. I can see why alot of the blame falls on Scott (being drunk/showing up late) but i can’t help but put some blame on the rest of the band. Hell, Dean said himself that Scott wants to bring in the deep cuts yet he feels “unsatisfied” playing those songs.I also remember reading awhile back an interview on blabbermouth where Scott was bragging about how the band is working on their next album, and a few weeks later Dean said “there’s no plans for a new album”. I hope the break up is not true but if it is, i would’nt mind them releasing a b-sides album from their entire catalogue. I Would really enjoy seeing Only Dying, Samba Nova, and Dancing Days on a physical cd.

  • RobGronkowskiReport

    Funny if true

  • Pepe Lou2

He drug addict so that why they fuck up! He was just ok long time ago with fake voice now drug band that make excuses and leave fans upset and broke.

They rip off other bands too like danzig and song about rape sex type thing. Listen and see how they copy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL7Jk8IMVXA

Not original at all as they steal from others. Fan boys of stp are the worst scum on earth. They should be ashamed of this bs they do to people.

  • Raj

Hope it isn’t true, STP are one of my favourite bands. I just saw them on Sept. 11th in Calgary and they played a really tight show. Scott looked very healthy and the band seemed to be on top of their game. It’s too bad they had some low ticket sales, but I hope they can release another STP album down the road.

Maybe it could be drugs, but if Scott was in really bad shape he would have died along time ago.

I could see VR doing another album after Slash finishes his solo tour or maybe Weiland wants to go on as a solo artist.

  • saitzev

what they have to do is the same thing but in a slower rate or velocity:
touring less, playing less, trip less and they have to take a long time to record en good new album. Last one is a shit and so far away from genuine STP style.
Long life STP, the best band of history, bigger than beatles.
