Stone Temple Pilots Singer Search Reportedly Going ‘Slow’

Longtime Alternative Nation reader Nicholas recently e-mailed us and said that he ran into Stone Temple Pilots drummer Eric Kretz when he was drumming with Late Night with Seth Meyers’ house band a couple of weeks ago.

“I actually bumped into Eric in the city when he was doing that Late Night thing. He said the singer search was going really slow and he didn’t appear to be at all enthusiastic about it getting done any time soon.”

Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo is currently on tour with Hollywood Vampires, which includes Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Matt Sorum.

Dean and Robert DeLeo discussed Stone Temple Pilots’ singer search in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, revealing that they have not yet found a new frontman and are still auditioning.

“We’ve all been kind of doing different things, but as far as Stone Temple Pilots is concerned, we’ve been neck-deep in the process of auditioning different singers,” Dean said.

Asked if the band was looking for another high-profile frontman or an unknown, Dean said, “We’re looking for somebody that fills a lot of criteria. Man, woman. There’s a couple of people we really dig and we have some more coming in.”

Robert said, “Look, we’re not trying to replace, it’s impossible to replace Scott, it really is. We created something that only the four of us could create, moreso it’s about moving forward, but it’s also about honoring that, and being able to get their creativity around that.”

He added, “I enjoy still playing the songs that Dean and I wrote, I want to continue playing those songs. I think people still want to hear those songs, and that’s what we want to do.”

“Eric, Dean and I have something – we’ve been playing music half our lives and you can’t just dismiss that. It’s something that I appreciate and I cherish in my life and I want to continue doing that.”

Stone Temple Pilots recently shot down ex-Creed frontman Scott Stapp as a new singer candidate when he hinted at getting the gig in an interview.

Looks like there are plenty of great replacements for Scott with all the talent out there, so what’s the problem? Some of those guys are dead ringers for Scott’s voice. Hope they don’t make the same mistake as other bands with new front men make in getting sub par new singers and trying to pass them off as “we’re not trying to replace anyone – our new singer is unique.” Translated: our new singer sucks, but our fans are desperate enough and nostalgic enough to put up with it. They auditioned a whole shitload of good musicians. They can either strike while the iron is still warm or fade off into eternity.

    • Hutttrash

Crawled back inside, left me on the wall.
So sullen truth is I’ll land where I fall!

  • Felonious Punk

“He said the singer search was going really slow and he didn’t appear to be at all enthusiastic about it getting done any time soon.”

Like honey being poured from a longneck bottle.

Take all the time you want, fellas. The outcome will still be the same no matter how long it takes: failure and mediocrity.

    • Hutttrash

      Tell me your worthless accolade.
Bore me to the point where I become jaded.
If I could look you in the eye!
You won’t have to say anymore!

      • Felonious Punk

        Dude, Headswim were fucking awesome!

        • Hutttrash

Too right, I’ve got some taste under my layers of bullshit.

          • Felonious Punk

They used to play Gone To Pot on my local rock radio station back in the day. Played another song by them off the Flood album as well, but the name escapes me at the moment. Great, underrated band tho..

          • Hutttrash

Odd Man Out Soundtrack ’95. We used to play this religiously cruzin round, soundtrack of my generation.

          • Felonious Punk

Jesus…that soundtrack is LOADED with greatness. Every band/song on that compilation is a winner!

          • Hutttrash

100% right there. The composition is amazing. Pennywheels at the end, it’s like honey being poured from a longneck bottle.

          • Felonious Punk

Pennywheels is a good song, but not even close to being the best thing on the Rotting Pinata album..

  • Raj

It’s going to be way too hard for the stp guys to find a singer who fills a lot of criteria, they don’t want a recycled retread singer from the 90’s. The unknowns do a great job with the stp songs but’s it hard to see their originality through that.

  • Mick O’Toole

Again, Scott Stapp DID NOT hint that he was joining STP. Re-read the press release from that interview. Continuing to suggest otherwise is not accurate. That’s how rumors are started. And that’s apparently how clicks are generated.

    • Felonious Punk

Oh shit, Scott Stapp is going to be trying out for STP?!

If anyone can fill Weiland’s shoes, it’s Stapp! Good scoop, Alt Nation!

      • Beefcake

Like really. What are people expecting other than a mostly bastardized version of this former great band!

    • Beefcake

Looks like it worked as here you are :p thanks for helping keep the lights on this week lol

    • Alternative Nation

Stapp’s non-denial and then hints was him stirring the pot. The interviewer did as well, but Stapp could have easily said I am not singing for STP.

      • Mick O’Toole

Stapp was avoiding saying he joined AoA as it was premature. His hints (meant to create interest) pointed at AoA. It’s hard to imagine that he intended people to think he joined STP. — Weeks later, for those who needed it, Stapp clarified his remarks and how they were taken out of context. Alternative Nation should not continue to carry that false narrative.

      • Marbin

“Stapp could have easily said I am not singing for STP.”

But he never said he was. Spin it how you want, but he never said it. Have a little integrity about it now that you know that you made an incorrect assertion.

This site likes to stir the pot. And then call it black (as kettles tend to do).

      • Valhalla

        What’s really going on?

    • God

I hope STP starts playing Creed songs soon

  • JoelS

Did this site even report on Eric drumming with the Late Night house band? Yet, Justin Bieber’s t-shirt choices get multiple articles.

    • Alternative Nation

It’s not a story that would get any hits unless Eric did an interview with us discussing it. Otherwise it’s just a waste of time.

      • Hutttrash

        Failure, climb into the water.
Sombre, like the feeling getting older!

      • Beefcake

        I’d hit that… 😉

      • Marbin

It’s news that I didn’t know about. It’s funny what you consider a waste of time.

Just keep us up to date on what concert Slash goes to see next.

      • Valhalla

But, you’ve transcribed interviews from other sources before. With respect, Justin Bieber T-shirtgate is a bit inane. What’s really going on?

        • Alternative Nation

He didn’t do any interviews at the show either. If he had, I’d have reported on it.

          • Valhalla

Oh, hello. I’d already given up on this site, but, made one last-ditch run through. Makes sense. I very much appreciate your reply. Maybe you do kinda care about some of us long-time lurkers, newbie posters? TBH, lately, the comment section is worse than a middle school clique of mean girls. And, I’m a “girl” who lived through that sh*t once. Not gonna do it twice. Thanks again for replying. Peace.

  • Hwang Sunghyeop

I think they’ve already select the frontman.
    Maybe Richard Patrick??

    • Hutttrash

And my brother he is strong.
      Stronger than any man!

      • Hwang Sunghyeop

        Yep I think so too.

    • Eddie Yarler

The new Filter album flopped commercially. Might as well. I don’t see why its so hard for them to make the connection.

      • Hwang Sunghyeop

In my opinion it’s good to see them start the name of Army Of Anyone.

        • Eddie Yarler

Totally agree man. I like Filter, but I think Army of Anyone is Richard’s best record. As for STP, I’m just not into the idea of them keeping the name without Scott. They should just stick to their guns with Army of Anyone and work as much as they can to re-establish that band. Maybe even have Chester hook them up with an opening on a Linkin Park tour or something.

        • Eddie Yarler

If you haven’t heard this song check it out. I have no idea why they left this off the album

  • Archthel_brandt

honestly, I think the band ought to employ Chester Benington for STP gigs at any number of festivals, and start a new band on the side. There is no reason to abandon the name/brand completely and Chester did a superb job filling in for Scott, but since he can’t do it full time why not just turn out a new band and new project, free yourself? I’ve dug Talk Show, Army of Anyone and STP with Chester Benington….you guys write superb music no matter what you call it

    • Hutttrash

We let the grass grow long between us, my friend.
We let the grass grow long between us!

  • God

has anyone asked Billy Corgan if he was interested?

  • Junior Moore

Joss Stone Temple Pilots was their best bet, imo. Her soulful voice over their style of rock would be great 👍. Not to mention the awesome band name.

  • Drew

“Stone Temple Pilots” has always acted a tad sanctimonious regarding how they want to move on from the drama and stress of playing with Scott – both before and after his death. Yet all they have to show is an uninspiring 5 song EP with Chester Bennington. Why drag the band’s name through the mud like this? Play as a threesome if they want, but just call it something else.

  • dakotablue

Kretz just turned 50. Happy birthday, man!

  • Valhalla

Was there a story on the 22nd anniversary of Purple, and I just missed it? Thanks!
