Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan discussed playing a ‘metal douche’ character onstage in a new Kerrang interview, and how he brings part of himself to that type of character.

You used to perform comedy at the Diamond Club in LA and appeared as a “metal douche” character. Did this introduce you to the idea of playing with different guises?

“It did, but you also have to bring a piece of yourself to those characters, provided you didn’t become the characters (laughs).”

What are the character ‘notes’ for your guise in A Perfect Circle?

“I took cues from English performers for the A Perfect Circle look, where it’s over the top, and for some people it’s mysterious, while for others it’s, ‘What the fuck is that guy doing?’ It’s a fine line: embracing that English thing where you almost have to become a caricature to become something relevant.”

Tool guitarist Adam Jones has confirmed that he is back in Los Angeles with stunning photos of the sky, so it appears that Tool have finally completed work on their new album, as they have returned home after doing mastering work in Portland, Maine with Bob Ludwig.

Unless Ludwig still has additional work to do on his own, it appears that after 13 years, the new Tool album is finally done. It is expected to be released in mid-May to mid-July.

Tool also announced new 2019 spring North American tour dates on Monday.
