Tool headlined the final night of the 2018 Rock on the Range festival a week ago, just two days following the one year anniversary of Chris Cornell’s death. Soundgarden were set to headline Rock on the Range one year ago prior to Cornell’s death.

According to Alternative Nation reporter Lauryn Schaffner, who was covering the show, Maynard James Keenan said after the first song, “We’d like to dedicate our entire set to the friends and family of Chris Cornell.”

Maynard James Keenan is part of a dying breed of surviving legendary 90’s alternative rock frontmen following the death of Cornell, having gained prominence with Tool in the 90’s as Soundgarden were part of the Grunge explosion in Seattle.

Keenan later hinted at fans running out of patience for Tool’s 12 years in the making new album. He said, “We fear the end of your patience.” He then said something along the lines of: ‘Things are progressing. Slow as fuck, but progressing.”

Tool recently finished recording Danny Carey’s drums for their new album, but they have not finished recording their music yet, which means despite writing new parts, Maynard James Keenan cannot record his vocals.
