Long-time fans of Guns N’ Roses (GNR) were overjoyed last year when it was announced that the group’s original lineup – Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan – had reunited and were heading out on tour together for the first time since 1993. Now that the legendary American hard rock band that hit prominent success during the late 80s and early 90’s has embarked on its “Not in This Lifetime…Tour”, there’s no better time to take a look at some interesting Gunners facts!
Here are 5 things that you (probably) didn’t know about GNR:
- Not every show was a sell-out success
At the first Guns N’ Roses show in Los Angeles, only two people showed up to hear the band perform. Although a true fact, it seems hard to believe nowadays considering GNR has become one of the most iconic hard rock bands of America that has since been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played in front of thousands worldwide.
- Axl bit a security guard on the leg
In addition to his unforgettable voice, Rose is well known for his incredible tantrums and hot temper. While in Stockholm, Sweden in 2006, Axl Rose was arrested for assault after allegedly biting a security guard on the leg. This wasn’t the first time the singer was arrested, back in 1998 he was arrested after allegedly threatening airport security. What’s more, according to Rolling Stone’s list of their wildest moments, the singer was also reportedly arrested in 1990 for allegedly assaulting his neighbor with a wine bottle and chicken.
- The band has an online slot based after them
Swedish-based online casino games developer, NetEnt, launched a Guns N’ Roses video slot themed after the band at the start of 2016. It is a part of the company’s successful NetEnt Rocks series, which also features additional slots themed after other rock legends Jimi Hendrix and Motorhead. The Guns N’ Roses slot features images of Rose, Slash and McKagan and a soundtrack of some of their hottest songs like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine”. You can find this game at NetEnt casinos.
- The music video for “Don’t Cry” actually featured Axl’s real-life therapist
The woman who plays Axl Roses’s psychotherpist in the music video for “Don’t Cry” is Suzzy London, who was, at the time, Axl’s real-life therapist. She occasionally accompanied the band on the road. One could say that her role in the music video was fittingly casted.
- Axl Rose punched David Bowie
During the filming of the music video “It’s So Easy”, David Bowie visited the set. Much to the chagrin of Axl Rose, he found the British singer flirting with his then-girlfriend Erin Everly. Angered by Bowie, he punched him and threw him off the set. Bowie wasn’t the only musician to get on Axl’s bad side. He also got into a fight with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love as well as a massive long-lasting feud with then ex-band mate, Slash.
