Billy Corgan Reveals How Nirvana ‘World’ Is ‘Trying To Cut My Ankles’

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan discussed issues he’s had with people in the ‘Nirvana world’ but not specifically members of the band in a new interview with Joe Rogan. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.

Corgan said, “Those inner scene rivalries never end. I’ve had weird experiences with, not with Nirvana ‘people,’ but people who were in the Nirvana world. There’s still this weird, cause I’m from Pumpkin world, like sometimes I’ll have weird stuff happen and I’ll dig down and find out it was somebody who used to work in Nirvana world trying to cut my ankles 27 years later. Like so weird.”

He also discussed playing at a club in Boston with Nirvana in 1992, and how the show wasn’t even sold out.

“We once played at that little club, it was an alt club across from Fenway, I can’t remember what it was called, Axis? We played there in, I don’t know, 1992, it wasn’t even sold out. Like 700 people kind of thing.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was asked about being one of the last surviving voices of the Grunge era/90’s alternative rock in a new San Francisco Chronicle interview.

The interviewer asked, “You’re the last man standing of a certain tribe. Do you ever look around and think, ‘How did I survive?'”

Corgan responded with high praise for his fallen contemporaries, “I really grieve those who are not taking the journey with me. Speaking as someone from a generation, it grieves me that there are not so many great voices that are not along for the ride and helping bolster the argument that our generation was incredibly valuable and continues to be valuable.”

Corgan also stated in the interview that he has no interest in continuing under the Smashing Pumpkins name without his original bandmates James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and D’arcy Wretzky.

“I would say over time it took me time to realize how people identified certain people and certain voices to a certain time. In their minds, the Smashing Pumpkins is very much stamped James, D’arcy, Billy and Jimmy. I’m not that interested in doing Smashing Pumpkins anymore without the original members involved because it just doesn’t feel as good as it should feel.”

It was late September 1991 in Boston, just before Nirvana hit the big time with “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” So had the show been maybe a week or two later, in early October, it would’ve been sold out for sure. Both Corgan and Chamberlin have spoken positively about that show in the past – typical Billy to sort of change his mind. By the way, that show (as Corgan has pointed out in the past) was the ONLY time ever in America that Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins played on the same stage on the same night (they did it a month or so earlier in Holland at a festival).

Doesn’t reveal how. Brett, ALL FIVE of your headlines in the main block contain the word reveal, and you seem incapable of actually using the word correctly. You seem to think it is interchangeable with the words ‘explain’, ‘claim’ and ‘allege’, and unaware of who actually holds the power to ‘reveal’ information in any dynamic. If you use the phrase ‘reveals how’, it requires an actual explanation of the events/methods that lead to a situation, not just a description of the situation.

Let’s break this down, using the Joe Rogan interview:
    1) Rogan cannot ‘reveal Axl Rose shot up his face’ because Rogan does not have inside access to that information. It is merely speculation on his part.
    2) Corgan does not ‘reveal how the Nirvana world is trying to cut his ankles’. He provides no information explaining HOW this is done, beyond ALLEGING that ‘weird stuff has happened.’ You’d need more specifics for it to be a ‘reveal’.

There are more cases, and people have tried to explain this to you, but your journalistic level is seemingly so poor that you don’t mind having words used incorrectly, needless repetition and 3/4 of any story being an almost completely unrelated piece from a month ago.
