Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl threw a Backbeat BBQ at Studio 606 earlier this week, and he invited Alice In Chains singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell.

Cantrell wrote on Instagram, “Mr Gibbons just sent me this selfie he took tonight at Dave Grohl’s backbeat BBQ. Some fine eats surrounded by even finer folks. My favorite part was Dave’s daughter on the chow line serving us all beans made by Rita Haney. Triple blend of Rita, Dime and Vinnie’s recipe . So cool seeing her helping her pop out to feed us all. A big thank you to the Grohl family.”

Jerry Cantrell was recently interviewed by Steve Jones on Jonesy’s Jukebox. Jones played Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl’s 23-minute song “Play” in its entirety while Cantrell was on. Alternative Nation transcribed Cantrell’s comments.

Cantrell said, “That’s a marathon, that’s pretty cool though. Old school. Is any song longer, like Frampton? Or In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?”

“That is longer than our whole record.”

“That’s pretty impressive though, I’ve got to say. There’s all sorts of stuff in there. Very Rushy at the top.”

Steve Jones said, “Maybe he’s doing an ode to all the bands that he likes. Definitely Rush.”

Cantrell added, “For sure, I know he’s a huge fan of those guys.”

Jones then said, “I got a text from somebody. This is from Dave Grohl, texted us while we were playing your song. ‘Hey Daddy-O, did you get a nap during my instrumental wankoff? Tell Cantrell I owe him 23 minutes of airtime.’”

Cantrell responded, “Well, we’ll call it even Dave, because Dave turned us onto Nick Raskulinecz, who we made three great records with, this one [Rainier Fog] is one, so we’ll call it even dude. That’s a heck of a piece of music there. I can’t wait to see the visual of it, of him doing all of that stuff.”

Jones said, “I’ll play it again for some payola. But you have to pay a lot, because it’s long.”

Cantrell laughed, which he did frequently during the interview.

“Well Dave’s probably got deeper pockets for the payola, so let me text him real quick.”
