Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was interviewed on The Howard Stern Show yesterday, and the two discussed the possibility of The Smashing Pumpkins being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alternative Nation transcribed the conversation.

Howard Stern: I was reading an interview with Billy Corgan, who I think is a genius, do we agree on that?

Chris Martin: About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Howard: Yes!

Chris: I think we agree that they should be there.

Howard: You’re supporting that?

Chris: My best friend Phil, who is in the next room, is the biggest Smashing Pumpkins fan.

Howard: They were great!

Chris: Especially when it was the original four, which was: Billy, D’arcy, James, and Jimmy.

Howard: That’s right.

Chris: And Ringo.

Howard: Ringo came in the second wave of Smashing Pumpkins

Chris: He was in the ‘less’ Smashing Pumpkins.

Howard: I was humiliated for him that he had to say in an interview: ‘I should be in the rock and roll Hall of Fame.’ He shouldn’t be one of those guys that has to campaign for an honor like that.

Billy Corgan discussed The Smashing Pumpkins possibly being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

“If it’s a meritocracy, I think my band belongs in there because we were one of the prime bands of our era and we continue to be a top band. Next year will be, technically, our 30th year. So the fact that I’ve been in this band, you know, essentially 25 of the last 30 years, I think that says something.”

Corgan was also asked if he might pull an Axl Rose and not show up due to his relationship with James Iha and D’arcy Wretzky if things get too complicated.

“I can’t answer those kinds of questions,” he says. “What if I say I will come and then 17 years later, when I’m in a wheelchair, they finally bring me in? I don’t fucking know. I just saw Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick and I said, ‘It’s about fucking time they put you in. What the fuck?’ And Rick being Rick, he laughed. He said, ‘I don’t give a shit. I’m in now.’ I think at the end of the day you hope that it’s fair and you get in on your accomplishment and it’s not a political thing. But I don’t know what to think about any of that anymore.”
