Another Smashing Pumpkins Member Wants Reunion: ‘All Of It Is Cool’

In a new ToddCast interview recorded earlier this month, Jimmy Chamberlin was asked if he ever envisioned a Smashing Pumpkins reunion after the original incarnation’s 2000 split.

“Uhhh, it’s hard to say. Yes and no. It’s hard to put that shit down, even now. As much as you try to run from, ‘I don’t want to be that guy,’ or for me my career in business, or my career in education, and all the things that I’ve done apart from the Pumpkins has really separated me, at least on a personal level. But musically, it’s just hard to jettison that shit, it’s just such a part of you. When you end up creating stuff on the peripheral of that, you end up just asking that question: fuck, if I’m going to do all that work, why don’t I give it the best chance of success right, and call it the Pumpkins? That’s what Billy’s done over the years, and I totally get that.”

Chamberlin was then asked about the original lineup possibly reuniting in the near future following the numerous reports and rumors that the lineup are discussing a reunion.

“Sure. Yeah, all of it is cool. Just playing with Billy or writing, that’s always cool. When him and I get in the room and we’re focused and have a destination, we generally get there in a pretty unique way, which is always fun musically. We always challenge each other in the best kinds of ways. I seem to create my most compelling drum parts in and around his compositions.”

Billy Corgan said yesterday he only wants to play under The Smashing Pumpkins name with his original bandmates.

“I think my interest in working on just the name Smashing Pumpkins is not as interesting to me without original people involved. It doesn’t seem to have the same resonant energy for me. I like to think that if I do any work in the future it would be with them, if possible.”
