Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has been very open throughout the years about his struggles with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, especially in the 90’s. During a recent Instagram story Q&A, he bravely revealed for the first time that he contemplated suicide in 2011/2012 during the making of The Smashing Pumpkins album Oceania. Oceania was released in June 2012.

Corgan has also communicated with Smashing Pumpkins fans dealing with suicidal thoughts and mental health issues in his Q&A’s. Below are some excerpts that we thought we would post to mark World Suicide Prevention Day.

What was inspiring you when you wrote Oceania?

“A terrible breakup that almost led me to kill myself. It was an awful time.”

Your music saved me during suicide attempts and made me a better musician. Just thanks, for my life.

“I am very glad you are still here.”

To WPC. How can I fight my suicidal thoughts?

“The fact that you are asking means you want to live. So trust that (and seek professional help!!).”

Thoughts on how this country handles mental health? Think the US will ever get it right?

“Disgracefully and no.”

WPC, in your opinion can art/music cure depression, even if only temporarily?

“Yes.”
