Speaking with NME, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz gives his take on where rock is today and where it might be going, specifically focusing on the idea of the “next Nirvana.”

“The interesting thing is that when I talk to my rock friends, they’re, like, ‘The next Nirvana is coming, the next Nirvana is coming,'” says Wentz. “And I’m like, ‘Yeah, the next Nirvana probably is coming, but not in the form of Nirvana.'”

As for what form the “next Nirvana” might take, Wentz said he expects Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith, to be the next Nirvana and Kurt Cobain.

“The reason Nirvana was a genre-killer is that it was a wave that came from nowhere,” he says. “Looking for something that sounds like that is not gonna work.”
