This past Friday, Green Day headlined Rock Werchter in Belgium – a concert which happened to land on the Fourth of July. Just like at many of their recent gigs, the band were not shy about calling out President Donald Trump and his administration.
Wasting no time, Green Day kicked off their set with their hit song “American Idiot,” changing the lyrics to say “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda” – something that has become a bit of a staple for them over the last few years.
After “American Idiot,” they jumped right into performing “Holiday,” during which frontman Billie Joe Armstrong led the crowd of nearly 90,000 attendees in a “f*ck Donald Trump” chant.
Towards the end of the show, Green Day played a portion of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” singing the line “By the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed, at the twilight’s last gleaming?” before transitioning into their track “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Green Day have been vocal critics of Trump for quite some time. Last month during their set at the Download Festival in England, Armstrong called the President a “fat b*stard” before saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are slipping into fascism… it’s up to us to fight back!”
