Tom Morello recently reflected on his role as the “curator” for Black Sabbath’s all-star “Back to the Beginning” farewell show, and highlighted how his goal was to make it “the greatest day in the history of heavy metal.”

The godfathers of metal, alongside the impressive roster of guest artists who played their hearts out at Villa Park this past Saturday, delivered an event that the heavy metal community won’t forget anytime soon.

As the event’s “curator”, Tom Morello played a rather big role in organizing the event and coming up with the list of music icons that would get the honor of seeing off Black Sabbath into retirement. During a recent interview with “The Strombo Show” he spoke about how he got contacted the bands that ended up participating in the event. He revealed how Guns N’ Roses called him up, wanting to be a part of the show.

“That has been quite a task, but, like, a real labor of love. The goal [was] a simple one, to make this the greatest day in the history of heavy metal. And to that end, when you call up and say, ‘Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne want you to play their last show,’ people pick up the phone.”

“So, first I locked in Metallica, and then it was Tool, then it was this one, and that one. Then, people started calling me up. Guns N’ Roses [were] like, ‘You haven’t called us yet.’ I’m like, ‘Please! We would love to have you.’ And really, it’s something that I’m very much looking forward to, and is also super stressful.”

He then revealed how the offer of the curator’s role came from Ozzy Osbourne’s wife, Sharon Osbourne herself. Tom Morello shared that over a year ago, Sharon Osbourne approached him about curating one final Black Sabbath show featuring Ozzy Osbourne. He was honored by the offer, calling Black Sabbath one of the greatest bands ever and crediting them with sparking his love for music and heavy metal.

“Over a year ago, I ran into Sharon. She said, ‘Ozzy is doing this one more show. Sabbath are doing one more show. And we were thinking that we would like you to be the curator of it.’ Well, first of all, thank you. Yes! And what the hell does that mean? And, like, heavy metal is the music that made me love music. It made me love music. And Black Sabbath invented heavy metal, one of the greatest bands of all time.”
