Late Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley’s birthday is today, and Jerry Cantrell celebrated by posting a rare birthday party photo on social media. Cantrell wrote, “Here’s a pic I believe I took of Layne, Dad, Mike, David and Mark Naficy . Remembering our friend on his B-day 📷JC.”

Mike Inez said, “Happy Birthday to one of the most bad ass motherfuckers to EVER pick up a microphone. #laynestaley #aliceinchains.”

Alice In Chains wrote on their Twitter, “Happy Birthday, Layne. We celebrate you every day.

#LayneStaley #Facelift #30daysofFacelift #AIChistory.”

Layne Staley would have been 53 years old today. Staley’s mother Nancy has held tribute shows in Seattle in the near two decades since Staley’s 2002 death. She has also raised awareness for addiction, and frequently communicated with fans.

Staley had one of the most innovative and underrated voices of the 90’s, with the early 2000’s post-Grunge scene with bands like Godsmack showing how vast his influence was. Staley created a haunting and heavy signature vocal style with Alice In Chains, and experimented into more intimate territory with Mad Seasons’ lone album Above, which sadly ended up being his penultimate album, as he then went into his mysterious final years. Alice In Chains continue to tour to this day, with a new generation of fans getting to hear Staley’s legendary material live.
