The Rolling Stones guitarist mourned his late partner Anita Pallenberg in a new Instagram post, wishing her a happy birthday.

“Happy Birthday, Anita. Keith🙏”

Pallenberg dated late Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones in the 60’s, before his violence and drug use drove her away before Jones’ own death.

Richards saw Jones assaulting Pallenberg, and pulled her away and then took her back to England, where she moved in with him. She and Richards began a relationship that lasted until 1980, although they never married. Richards’ lifestyle was not conducive to fatherhood, Pallenberg later explained.

She was trying to raise their two young children but Richards was up all night and slept all day. Richards eventually was able to detox himself from drugs and stay clean, but Pallenberg continued to use. This was what ended their relationship, according to Richards’ 2010 autobiography.

Marianne Faithfull wrote in her 1994 autobiography Faithfull, “How Anita came to be with Brian is really the story of how the Stones became the Stones. She almost single-handedly engineered a cultural revolution in London by bringing together the Stones and the jeunesse dorée…The Stones came away with a patina of aristocratic decadence that served as a perfect counterfoil to the raw roots blues of their music. This…transformed the Stones from pop stars into cultural icons.”

Pallenberg died on June 13, 2017 at the age of 75 due to complications from hepatitis C.

He also wished his daughter Angela a happy birthday.
