Metal singer criticizes Bad Bunny at Super Bowl

Michael Sweet, singer of the Christian metal band Stryper, recently shared his frustration about the Super Bowl halftime show. He posted on Facebook after hearing that Bad Bunny will perform at Super Bowl LX, asking why rock bands are no longer part of the big event.

Sweet said nothing compares to a classic rock halftime show and doubted if fans will ever see one again. His post got a lot of reactions, and he later added that if enough people speak up, it might make a difference.

“There’s nothing like a good, old fashioned half-time rock show,” Sweet said. Will we ever see a rock band delivering a rock set at The Super Bowl again? Probably not…

Thanks for sharing,” he continued. “Enough ‘noise’ sometimes makes a difference.”

His comments point to a bigger trend. In the past, rock bands like U2 in 2002 and The Rolling Stones in 2006 put on memorable Super Bowl shows. U2’s performance after 9/11 was especially powerful. But over the years, the NFL has shifted toward pop and hip-hop artists. Recent acts like Kendrick Lamar in 2025 and now Bad Bunny show the league’s focus on younger and more diverse audiences.

Today, the halftime show is more about flashy performances and big-name pop stars than rock music. This reflects the music industry overall, where streaming and social media push pop and hip-hop to the front.
