Metallica Make Crazy Tom Cruise Revelation

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told a wild story about filming the music video for “I Disappear” for Tom Cruise’s film Mission Impossible 2 in 2000.

“19 years ago today, April 13 2000, we shot the video for “I Disappear” out in Monument Valley on The Navajo Nation Reservation. Filming took place on top of a sandstone butte that we could only access by helicopter. There was no equipment up there other than the guitars/bass and a simple drum kit ..

We started shooting at dawn and about 12 hours later as the day was winding down, the wind had whipped up so much that it blew over the drum kit as you can see in the last few seconds of the video… it was one of the craziest and most surreal days I’ve ever experienced, spending basically the whole day up there as helicopters and various handheld cameras captured the endless run-throughs of the song in this unbelievable and otherworldly scenery.

A few days later, I shot the scenes for my vignette in a downtown LA skyscraper. A whole day of full on action sequences, explosions, chaos and mayhem… way fuckin fun.. and a few weeks later, we had one of my all time favorite promo videos and one that I think has not only aged well, but plays as very cool companion piece to “Mission: Impossible 2”, the movie the song was written for. #wanna.”
