Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic discussed their text messages planning their Cal Jam 2018 reunion performance with Joan Jett and John McCauley in a new Kerrang Magazine interview.

Grohl said, “It was really by chance. We never had any grand plans to make that happen – it came together four or five days before the show Krist texted me saying: ‘John’s gonna be there, do you wanna do some songs?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah.’ Once everybody agreed to do it, that’s when it ramped up into becoming a reality.”

Novoselic said, “Well, I thought that since we were all going to be there, we might do a song or three, maybe with John [McCauley]. And then, of course, Joan [Jett] was also around, so we thought, ‘Let’s just get on and do it!’”

Joan Jett was interviewed about fronting the Nirvana reunion at Cal Jam 2018 in a new episode of Kyle Meredith With… on Consequence of Sound. Alternative Nation transcribed her comments.

“It’s heavy on all levels. It’s weighty because of who they are, who they were, and what they meant to people, what they mean to people, what Kurt means to people. It’s very humbling and scary to be asked, but as a fan, there was no way I could say no. There was just no way I could say no, and if I was getting the okay from the actual guys in Nirvana, who am I to say I can’t do this? So they asked me for the Hall of Fame, and I was just petrified but had to do it.

I was strangely calm that night, it went great, I felt great about it, and that was that. So this weekend I just got a text out of the blue, the Foos are doing a concert out in California, the Cal Jam. It’s their show, it was a big festival, and I don’t know, they just decided to do some Nirvana stuff. I guess the whole band was there because Krist’s other band was playing the festival and obviously Pat and Dave were there with the Foos.

Obviously I don’t know what their dialog about it was, but I just got a call to see if I would want to do it again. I’m just so honored to be asked, but it is strange and weighty, I don’t quite know what to think about it. I feel like I do it, then I look down and walk away, because it’s not anything you can own. You just do it as a conduit.”

She wasn’t sure about a Nirvana reunion tour happening, but seemed open to considering it.

“I can’t even contemplate that. I can’t even think that they would do that? If it comes up, I’ll figure it out then.”
