Review: He Is Me Get Rebellious With Shades Of The Doors & NIN On “Cleansing”

He Is Me have premiered the new music video for “Cleansing.” The track opening is reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, with the refrain: ‘This house needs a fire/this town needs a crier.’ The guitars then kick in and the rhythm picks up, with a continuation of the refrain, but this time with a modern day Jim Morrisonesque vocal delivery from singer Steve Moore. The next verse is driven by a great bassline, questioning when enough will be enough, which kicks back in to the soaring ‘This House needs a fire/this town needs a crier’ chorus.

There is a Soundgarden meets The Doors quality to the track during its high points, with guitar work that sounds reminiscent of Kim Thayil’s playing in the 90’s. The breakdown later in the song has an Alice In Chains feel, with haunting vocals. While the track clocks in at 6 minutes, it does not drag at all, and has nonstop hooks throughout.

“Cleansing” refers to the need for deep change within us and, by extension, within our societies. The music video, directed by Casey Baunger, reflects this. It is a call to action and a song of the times, with visuals of rioters definitely reflecting modern society, and being a great representation of the struggle described in the song.
