Roger Waters is a fan of Neil Young

During an appearance on The Independent Ink, Roger Waters praised Neil Young, calling himself a huge fan. He admires Young for always expressing his true feelings through music and in website posts, describing it as an instinct he can’t suppress.

He said, as transcribed by Alternative Nation, “I’m a huge fan of Neil Young. Why am I a fan of Neil Young though? I think because he can’t stop himself from attaching to the pesky Indian that he’s got inside him and expressing his real feelings about things and that is why his music is so… ”

Waters highlighted the song “Powderfinger” from Rust Never Sleeps as a favorite example, noting its raw honesty. He also said that he loves Young’s love songs and broader catalog.

He said, “That is why what’s the song uh is it called ‘Powder Monkey’ ‘look out man there’s a white boat coming up the river,’ it’s got a something on the front and I don’t think they’re here to deliver the mail. And right which was on ‘Rust Never Sleeps’ which was my favorite bit of Neil though.

Ultimately, he described Neil Young as a “national treasure”, saying:

”I love the love songs, I love Elvis Moon and I love all of that, as I love all of his work you know, he really is a national treasure. What am I trying to say I think the whole movement thing is is fascinating in an academic way but I don’t find I don’t find myself attaching to anything that was spectacular.

Waters admires Neil Young’s authenticity and emotional honesty in music, considering him one of the most important artists of his generation.
