Tom Morello Says Yungblud Was Last-Minute ‘Changes’ Singer
Tom Morello has revealed that Yungblud’s performance of Black Sabbath’s “Changes” at the band’s farewell “Back To The Beginning” show was almost derailed by a late switch, with the singer only stepping into the spotlight two days before the concert. Morello, who helped curate the all-star event, said the behind-the-scenes planning was far more chaotic than it appeared to fans on the night.
In a new interview, Guitar.com reported that Morello told 98KUPD radio that “48 hours before” the show, Yungblud “wasn’t gonna be the singer of that song,” and that he received a call after landing at Heathrow saying the original plan for the performance “wasn’t happening.” Morello said the team had to “figure it out” quickly, and the last-minute change ended up producing one of the night’s standout moments.
Morello also described the scale of the production, saying it involved “thousands of hours” of preparation and that elements were still changing in the final 24 hours. He added that once the event began, he felt he had to let go of the details because the artists would either deliver or “fall off the stage,” underscoring how fast-moving the situation was even on show day.
The “Changes” moment has continued to fuel wider chatter around the singer, especially after Dave Mustaine issued a warning to Yungblud in separate recent coverage.
Morello said his last in-person exchange with Ozzy Osbourne came at the afterparty, where the singer thanked him for the night before bluntly telling him to relay a message to Sharon Osbourne that he wanted to leave, bringing the evening to a characteristically Ozzy close.
