While known for his work as a comedian, John Mulaney is also quite the music buff and has been fascinated with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for years. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Mulaney shared his thoughts on this year’s inductees – including The White Stripes.
“They’re incredible and what a great treasure of American music,” he said of the band. “I love Jack in that way that he has what I love so much about David Byrne: just this desire to innovate and collaborate, be it Loretta Lynn or doing some music for a Maya Rudolph and Martin Short variety show or whatever it is.”
While it is likely Jack White will be in attendance and perform, there is some question as to whether his former bandmate and ex-wife Meg White will make an appearance.
As stated in the article, Meg hasn’t “really been seen at all in more than 15 years.” Mulaney, however, thinks an appearance by Meg is not only possible, but likely.
“Just things the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is made of. This is no surprise,” he said. “Such re-emergences into public life is the whole thing of the induction ceremony. Standard stuff. Most folks you see at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction you haven’t seen in a while. That’s the most fun of it.”
When asked point-blank if he thinks she’ll show up, Mulaney responded: “Yeah, why not? I say ‘why not’ not trying to cause any controversy. I don’t know if there’s any issues. I just would say why not.”
The comedian then added that he believes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is “enough of an event” for her to make a public appearance, despite being out of the public eye for so long.
“And I’ll make the case. Couple examples: Kurt Cobain’s mother said when they were inducted, and I’m paraphrasing, ‘Kurt would really love this, but he would act like he didn’t.’ And at the Radiohead induction, which I was at, I think it was Ed O’Brien who said, and I’m paraphrasing again, but this was the spirit of it, ‘I wish the other guys were here to see it, because this is a big f*cking deal.’ And I think it’s one of those things you might appreciate when you get there.”
