Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello recently shared his thoughts on Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani being elected as the 111th mayor of New York City on Tuesday.

Taking to his Instagram account, Morello posted a picture of himself alongside caption that read,
“On the morning of the 1st of 5 RATM shows at MSG in 2022 I visited the old apartment in Harlem where my mom & I lived when I was born, never dreaming that 3 yrs later NYC would elect a proudly socialist mayor. Proud of NYC for sticking it to the corporate Dems and racist chodes!”
Mamdani recently defeated the former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa and made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor.
The 34-year-old democratic socialist and state assembly member from Queens secured victory with more than 50% of the vote. Cuomo finished in second place with just over 40%, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa received just over 7% of the votes.
Mamdani’s historic victory was announced alongside a wave of Democratic wins across the country. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger became Virginia’s first female governor, Mikie Sherrill defeated her Trump-backed gubernatorial opponent in New Jersey, and California voters supported Gavin Newsom’s push for redistricting maps, which are expected to yield five new congressional seats for the party.
The crowd at Mamdani’s election night party at the Brooklyn Paramount in downtown Brooklyn erupted after the Associated Press called the race in his favor. People cheered and hugged each other at the news.
In addition to being New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani is also the first South Asian mayor and the youngest mayor in more than a century.
