Hollywood Figures May Be Called as Witnesses

Several well-known Hollywood figures could be asked to testify in the upcoming murder trial of Nick Reiner, according to a report from The Mercury News. Reiner, 32, is accused of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner.

Events Leading Up to the Murders

Hours before the killings, Nick Reiner attended a holiday party hosted by late-night TV star Conan O’Brien. Several Hollywood stars were present, including Jane Fonda and comedian Bill Hader.

Reports say Nick behaved strangely at the party. He reportedly approached guests and asked if they were famous, which caused visible tension. Rob Reiner was seen arguing with his son before apologizing to others and leaving early. The situation was so uncomfortable that some guests considered calling the police.

Why Party Guests Matter to the Case

Legal experts, like R.J. Dreiling say Nick Reiner’s mental health will be a major focus at trial. He has struggled with substance abuse and has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Because of this, anyone who interacted with him shortly before the murders could become an important witness.

The former prosecutor explained that guests who noticed signs of mental distress may be called by the defense, while those who felt Nick appeared calm and aware could be called by the prosecution. As a result, people from the same party could end up testifying on opposite sides of the case.

“It’s very likely that some people from that party are going to end up on a witness list, either for the defense or the prosecution.  If (Reiner) was exhibiting mental health issues, (the party guests) end up on the defense list,” Dreiling said. “If he appeared to have his bearings straight, like, he was able to interact with people and have a straightforward conversation and was not hallucinating, [the guest] might end up on the prosecution side. It’s also highly possible you will have some people from the party on the defense list, and some on the prosecution list.”
