In a new How The Hell Did That Happen? with Mary Lou Lord and Maryanne Window podcast, Lord discussed her late ex-boyfriend, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Alternative Nation reporter Mike Mazzarone transcribed her comments. Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl had adorably weird reactions to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video for the first time, running in and out of the room calling their mothers, and there was jumping up and down on a bed.

Mary Lou Lord: [Kurt Cobain] had never been on TV before, and so they were staying at the RogerSmith Hotel, I remember. We were all getting ready to watch 120 Minutes and it was Kurt, my friend Deb, who I had invited, myself, Krist [Novoselic] and Dave [Grohl]. So we were in the room, getting ready to watch 120 Minutes, and he told me all about the video. From where they made it at Fairfax High, the janitor and all people [in the video] blah, blah, blah. It came on and Dave and Krist were running in and out of the room and they were calling their moms, Kurt was doing the same thing, and we were jumping up and down on bed.

“Holy shit, you’re on MTV”

It was just incredible. When you grow up with MTV like we did, that’s the top notch echelon. You get on MTV an you win a Grammy. You can be on the radio…

Maryanne Window: Oh my God, it’s the biggest thing ever!

Mary Lou Lord: You just never forget your first time on TV. This is what we worked so hard for, we were on MTV.

Maryanne Window: Absolutely.

Mary Lou Lord: It was very cool, that was incredibly, incredibly fun. I remember we went to a party, that was either that night or the next and we all went to this bar, there was this jukebox there and I was like:

“Let’s put on some disco music.”

And we put on some dance music and asked Kurt to dance with me and he did, he just danced his ass off. All those people that were at the party, I think they were MTV people, maybe some Geffen [Records] people but they can attest to it. Kurt danced his ass off and it was the beginning of something fucking awesome.
