John Frusciante’s former guitar tech Dave Lee discussed the former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist’s superstitions and gear in Dave Mail 59, Dave Mail 54, and Dave Mail 52 on JFEffects.
Did Frusciante do anything before recordings or performances? Did he have any superstitions or something?
Dave Lee: “No “superstitions”. But he always did yoga before shows. Like, incredible yoga. John could fold himself backwards. Like in half. Pretty amazing.”

When John Frusciante rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis bought him the ’62 Fender Stratocaster – as said by Kiedis in his autobiography, Scar Tissue, they went to the Guitar Center in LA and Frusciante picked the guitar. Did you participated in choosing it? What are the guitar’s main features?
Dave Lee: “No. That all happened before any of us knew John was back in the band. When that decision was made that John was returning, it was real hush hush at first.”

Do you remember the level that you and John used on the Boss CE-1 chorus pedal? And was it on High or Low?
Dave Lee: “I think it was around 2:00. Or between 1:00 and 2:00 usually. The CE-1 was (if I remember) on high.”
