Former The Verve guitarist Nick McCabe recently linked to Smashing Pumpkins’ song “Shame” on Facebook. He initially appeared to be posting it to refer to Mansun’s Paul Draper leaving Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms stage early at a recent concert.

He wrote, “For PD. Sleep it off.”

He commented, “Really feeling for his band. Big break turned out not so hot. Good band. Wasted.”

He then criticized Billy Corgan, but complimented The Smashing Pumpkins’ performances.

“I do love that tune. Touring with them soured the band for me but they were great whatever Billy’s issues.”

McCabe wrote a few years ago on Facebook about touring with The Smashing Pumpkins as well.

He wrote at the time, “I do remember…fairly well. We all thought the Pumpkins were absolutely fuckin’ incredible around the time of Gish. Billy was kind of difficult and strangely over sensitive and I think the European crowds loved baiting him. I think our supports in Europe were more successful for us than them. There were very funny moments. Whatever Billy was going through then though, they were an INCREDIBLE live band. Really powerful.”

The Verve broke up in 1999 and reunited from 2007 to 2009 until breaking up again for good.
