Former Foo Fighters drummer William Goldsmith has been in the news recently for heavily criticizing Dave Grohl, and claiming he played a role in Sunny Day Real Estate never releasing their fifth album, though he later clarified his statement with additional reasoning, while still throwing shade at Grohl. This new story has led to Foo Fighters fans resurfacing an interview that Goldsmith did on The Trap Set with Joe Wong in 2016 that was not circulated at all in the press at the time.

Alternative Nation transcribed his comments about how Dave Grohl made him feel intimidated creatively due to his talent on drums.

Wong asked, “Did you get any sort of creative enjoyment, were you able to make the beats your own?”

Goldsmith said, “For me, I definitely admired Dave as a drummer, so I kind of felt like, who am I to alter such a thing? I just didn’t know. Not to mention, to alter it or evolve it, I would actually have to have time to sit down, and jam, to sit down and actually play the songs, and experiment with the songs, rather than just have them be handed to you on a cookie sheet. It was just already there, so it was like, shit.”

Wong said, “When I found myself in similar situation, I try to inject my own feel into it or something, and I always try to have some other project going on where I’m writing the songs, so that I have a different creative outlet.”

Goldsmith said, “It would be nice if there would have been time, but dude, I was on the road for 17 months.”
