Mastodon is one of the most revered metal bands still active today. They have managed to achieve a respectable level of mainstream success while keeping the unique identity that made them references in the genre.
Brent Hinds opens up on the surprising reaction of Angus Young
One of the most recognizable elements of the band is the distinctive style of singer and guitarist Brent Hinds, whose riffs and leads are constantly praised for their catchiness and melody. There are several influences in the Mastodon sound is as diverse as one might expect, Hinds saves the top spot in inspiration for AC/DC’s guitar legend Angus Young.
And the Mastodon axeman even had the chance to meet his guitar hero and tell Angus how much he meant to him. However, as Hinds revealed a while back, the resulting reaction was unexpected, to say the least.
“Angus Young was my original first favorite guitar player. And then I met him and I told him that he was my favorite guitar player. And he told me to stop pissing in his pocket. So I told him, ‘F*** off’ or something. ‘Whatever, f*** you.'”
Hinds then added the following for context:
“We were at the Golden God Awards and one of my liaisons was like… I was supposed to take Angus Young to the bathroom. ‘I know you’re a huge fan, take him to the bathroom.’
“So I take him, like grab his arm and take him to the bathroom. I was waiting for him and I was like, ‘Hey man, I just want to thank you for your work.’
“And he just looks at me like I’ve got shit on my face or something. ‘I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.’ And he said, ‘What are you talking about?’ I’m like, ‘I started playing guitar because of you.’
“And he’s like, ‘Quit pissing in my pocket.’ I was like, ‘F*** you,’ basically. I say, ‘Your pocket is way too far down there to piss in.”
