Jane Seymour Recalls Onstage ‘Marriage’ to Freddie Mercury
Ms. Jane Seymour has recalled an unlikely brush with rock history, sharing a story about the time she was presented as Freddie Mercury’s “bride” during a major 1980s charity event in London. The actress, now 75, said the moment remains one of her most vivid memories from an era when fashion spectacles and pop stardom often collided on the same stage.
Seymour said the incident took place during Fashion Aid at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1985, where she modelled in a bridal gown by designers David and Ms. Elizabeth Emanuel and was cast as Mercury’s bride, People reported.
In a TikTok video, Seymour described being backstage in an elaborate dress and floral headpiece, then finding herself near stars including David Bowie and Boy George before heading onstage as part of the show’s choreography. She said the production had been rehearsed, but one detail caught her off guard once they were in front of the crowd.
According to Seymour, Mercury unexpectedly kissed her during the live event, something she said had not been planned, before he grabbed and tossed her bouquet into the audience. Seymour ended her story by calling the episode “absolutely sublime” and said being Mercury’s onstage wife was “one of the great memories of my life.”
The anecdote is a reminder of Mercury’s larger-than-life showmanship and the way charity events in the 1980s frequently paired musicians and celebrities in theatrical moments designed for maximum impact. Seymour’s account also underscores how carefully staged performances could still produce spontaneous surprises once the lights came up.
