Despite typically keeping his political opinions to himself and believing politics should be kept out of music, Alice Cooper is no stranger to presidential elections. The musician has run for office every four years since 1972 as part of a long-running joke in promotion of his song “Elected.”

Now, while speaking with The Times in a new interview, Cooper shared his thoughts on the current state of politics in the U.S. and his past relationship with Donald Trump.

Having played golf with Trump, in a previous interview Cooper implied that the President cheats during the game. Now, the musician seems to be downplaying that statement.

“No, Trump is not the biggest cheat. I can think of a few worse,” he told The Times. “But if any president who plays golf says he doesn’t cheat, don’t vote for them. I’m not talking about in competition; if you’re playing an everyday game among friends for bragging rights, then everyone cheats, right? But Trump was good. He can play.”

When asked if he likes Trump, Cooper replied that they “got along OK” before giving his opinion as to why he thinks Trump won the 2024 presidential election.

“Look, America has been having a slow-motion nervous breakdown for a while now. It got so ‘woke’ with the Biden people, even they thought it was crazy. If a guy says to a coworker, ‘I like your new dress,’ that means he now gets fired? That’s crazy. It got so over the top that whoever ran against the Democrats was going to win. America got sick of the stupidness and all I can say is, in a shooting war, you don’t want a poodle; you want a pitbull.”
