Billy Corgan Pulls Smashing Pumpkins Album After ‘Everyone Told Me It Was No Good’

A little while back, Billy Corgan pulled the 2007 Smashing Pumpkins album Zeitgeist from streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. Corgan reflected on this decision during recent Instagram story Q&A’s.

So you took Zeitgeist off streaming services because you’re unhappy with the mix?

“No, I took it off because everyone told me it was no good. So I said, OK #becarefulwhatyouwishfor.”

I really wish I could’ve heard Zeitgeist before it was taken off music platforms.

“Me too. Shame those albums are so poor that they had to disappear.”

Why do you give haters the time of day? I say post Zeitgeist and let it be.

“Why do people feel the need to tell me what to do? Far more offensive than the so-called haters.”

I listen to Z with all released songs of the era (bsides, GLOW, Superchrist). Its superb.

“Thank you. we felt the songs were strong but few agreed at the time.”

Any special plans to celebrate Mr. Choo Choo’s birthday? (Besides the album release.)

“He told me he wants a #1 album. I said, ‘Son, Zeitgeist was #2 and now you can’t even stream it, so…’”

Why don’t people just buy Zeitgeist CD if they wanna hear it so bad? I have 4 diff versions.

“I have 3,000 copies in storage that label sold me for scrap (They were going to destroy them rather than store). IF you really want them.”

If Zeitgeist is not available on streaming services because lots of people didn’t like it, then why are the rest of his 21th century Pumpkins albums available on said streaming services?

  • Corndog

I’d take Zeitgeist over anything between it and Mellon Collie.

    • Zachery W Egan

Zwan was far better than Zeitgeist.

      • Corndog

I liked Zwan, but I preferred Zeitgeist. Time has been kinder to Zeitgeist than Zwan. I remember loving songs like Baby Let’s Rock but now they make me cringe a little.

Ride a Black Swan, Lyric, Mary Star of the Sea, Endless Summer, Heartsongs, Honestly,…. these are some of WPC’s best work.

          • Corndog

I think I listened to nothing but Zwan for at least a couple of weeks after it was released. I absolutely loved it back then but I’ve gone off it somewhat since then. The songs haven’t aged all that well. Still better than Oceania and Monuments though. Those albums were terrible!

The non-album Zwan songs were better than what ended up on MSTOS.

Zwan also doesn’t stream (I don’t think). I searched for it on itunes recently and it is not there.

Zeitgeist is a classic album to me.. Love it with all of the songs from the era.

I love how they quoted one of my questions above.

      • Corndog

I never really understood the hate for that album. I always liked it personally.

      • Michael Dolce

Same here – really rocking album. Weird.

    • Kooler Than Jesus

Adore and Machina are like a billion times better than Zeitgeist, imo, specially Adore.

  • Backdoorman

Zeitgeist is a great album…heavy and melodic…the last classic album

No one lives in ole Bitter’s head like ole Bitter Bore-Again himself.

  • Stifler’s Mom

I give Zeitgeist a spin once in a while. The first half of the album is stronger than the second. Doomsday Clock and Tarantula are good tunes, and very heavy…
But it is certainly not the big comeback album it was supposed to be. Doesn’t hold up nearly as well as any of the 90s stuff, not by a long shot. Believe it or not, I found a deluxe double-CD version of Zeitgest in the dollar store. That’s right, the dollar store. Not because it’s a terrible album, per say, but probably because it fell way, way short of sales expectations. I’ve also found new sealed copies of Chinese Democracy at the dollar store. Crazy, right?

    He’s such a whiny baby.

About half the songs on it were good. United States may be my favorite Pumpkins song from any album. The other half was not nearly as good and some, like For God and Country and Pomp and Circumstances were just downright bad from what i remember.

  • JipC

The problem with Zeitgeist really WAS the mix. They sounded amazing live. Unfortunate.

  • Heyward_Yablouin

I try to remember the Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan as they were in the 90s, as opposed to the sub-par songwriting, conspiracy-theory peddling Corgan of today.
