Chris Cornell’s widow Vicky thanked a fan for supporting her as she raises awareness for the opioid epidemic in a new Instagram comment. She also criticized people who try to stigmatize drug addiction, and attack her for trying to help others who suffer from the same disease her late husband did.

“It is awful, it’s disrespectful, it’s stigmatizing, and it’s so disingenuous at best this misinformation can cost lives. Thank you for trying to shed light and support.

“My husband was not a junkie, and my husband’s death will not go in vain. If you loved him you want him here- and you want to know why he’s not. If you want to argue the drugs reach out to ME himself and ask if this is what he meant. My husband was the victim of a hidden epidemic of overprescribing – I want him back, my children want him back. You want to say depression, I have no issue you can help millions of others.

But that’s not what happened to MY husband. My husband lost his life because of this over prescribing and no education, so much stigma that even doctors don’t treat those with substance use disorders properly. Thank you all for your support and love against this heinous and stigmatizing attack.”

She also wrote in another comment, “Thank you all for your support and love and helping educate others so that the horror and tragedy my children and I are living through does not happen to someone else. Prevention starts with finding the cause. Depression and addiction both are mental health issues – we should not fight over that – there is no reason to.”
