Following health complications in January 2019, Lagerfeld was admitted to the American Hospital of Paris in Parisian suburb Neuilly-sur-Seine on February 18th. The morning after, he died at that hospital, aged 85. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Kurt Cobain’s widow and former Hole singer Courtney Love reacted to the death on social media.

“Ok… the world feels weird. I loved you so much. 💔”

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan’s girlfriend Chloe Mendel wrote on Instagram, “A legend.
Karl was a force of creativity and passion that shaped the fashion industry for decades. I remember when he did a fauxfur collection for Chanel and my mind was blown. He will be missed by many. #karllagerfeld @karllagerfeld #RIP.”

“We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing today,” Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, said Tuesday. “His unrivaled contribution to the fashion industry changed the way women dress and perceive fashion. He inspired generations of young designers and will continue to do so.”

Lagerfeld was a German creative director, fashion designer, artist, photographer and caricaturist who lived in Paris. He was known as the creative director of the French luxury fashion house Chanel (from 1983 until his death), as well as creative director of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house Fendi and his own eponymous fashion label. Over the decades, he collaborated on a variety of fashion and art-related projects. He was well recognized around the world for his white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high starched collars.
