Courtney Love’s new documentary, “Antiheroine,” premiered Tuesday (Jan. 27) at the Sundance Film Festival. Although she was expected to attend the debut screening, the Hole frontwoman was notably absent.

According to People, Sundance Film Festival director Eugene Hernandez told the audience during his introduction of the film that Love was unfortunately “not able to make it to tonight’s screening.”

“We’re really gutted that Courtney couldn’t make it tonight to celebrate this moment with us all,” the documentary’s co-director Edward Lovelace added, going on to describe her as “so unfiltered, so truthful.”

“But we just wanted to say it’s been the greatest of privileges to be invited into Courtney’s personal space to make such an intimate honest film with someone we have so much love for,” Lovelace continued.

He then thanked Love “for trusting us to — alongside her — tell her story and allowing us to experience the last three years.”

“Antiheroine” is an intimate new documentary told in Love’s own words. It spans her ascent in music and her marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, through her 2019 move to London and her long-awaited return to recording new music.

“Singer, songwriter, and actor Courtney Love has long had an impact on rock and pop culture. Now sober and set to release new music for the first time in over a decade, Courtney is ready to reveal her story, unfiltered and unapologetic,” a synopsis shared by Dorothy St Pictures reads.

Speaking about the film, producer Julia Nottingham said in a previous statement:

“Courtney has waited a long time to tell her story, in her own words and it’s deeply important to all of us at Dorothy St Pictures that strong, female-forward stories find the audiences they deserve. As a child of the 90s, I was always curious about Courtney, a woman who often appeared to be defined by her husband Kurt Cobain. We made this film because Courtney’s story is bigger than the headlines. It’s raw, complicated, and deeply human.”
