In celebration of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary, several projects are in the works to mark this major milestone. Aside from a four-part docuseries titled “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” NBC is also producing a documentary on the long list of musical guests that have performed on the show over the last 50 years.
Set to be directed by Questlove, “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music” will dive into the program’s rich musical history. “Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg…” Questlove said, speaking about the project. “The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or other. I’m so happy I went on the trip and now get to share it with everyone.”
The three hour film, which premieres on January 27, 2025, will feature a massive list of musicians and artists, including former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Paul Simon, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Justin Timberlake, and many more.
Though it is unclear when Dave Grohl’s interview was filmed, his appearance in the documentary will mark his first televised appearance since he announced this past September that he fathered a child outside of his marriage.
Grohl has a long history with SNL, as he holds the record for as the show’s most frequent musical guests with sixteen appearances since 1992, having performed multiple times with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and as a special guest.
