Dave Grohl discussed performing on Saturday Night Live with Nirvana for the first time in a new YouTube video. He said at that point, he’d been waiting for the SNL performance his entire life, but he almost blew it when he broke his stick!

“Foo Fighters have been on Saturday Night Live 7 times. First record, third record, fourth record, I can’t count that high, but a lot. Actually we played Kristen Wiig’s first show and her last show. When Nirvana played here the first time, we were downstairs in the tiny little dressing room, and that’s when Weird Al Yankovic called the dressing room to talk to us to ask if he could parody our song.”

He added, “I had been waiting for this moment [the Saturday Night Live performance] my entire life, to actually play on Saturday Night Live. Sometimes when you’re scared, and your adrenaline is pumping, you just start beating the shit out of your instrument. We started into Smells Like Teen Spirit (makes banging noise), and my left stick broke. I broke my stick on my snare drum, so it went from being [long] to [short]. Those are some real life moments.”
