Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro recently joined in for an interview with Guitar Guitar and spoke about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ One Hot Minute album that dropped back in 1995.

Dave Navarro opens up on the album

When the interviewer revealed that he heard Navarro first time on One Hot Minute, he said:

“Oh, that’s nice. A lot of people didn’t really care for that record! You know, musically our backgrounds were so incredibly different that it kind of shows on that record. I recently listened to some of it and I was like, wow some of the musical stuff here is kind of cool!”

Dave Navarro further appreciated that and noted that it wasn’t received well. However, he said that would be the sound when two distinct sounds were blended and it clashed. HE said:

“So I appreciate that, because it wasn’t well received, but that’s what it sounds like when you take a guy from one band that has a distinct sound and mash it into a band that has another distinct sound: it’s gonna clash a little bit! In fact, when Flea joined Jane’s Addiction in 1997 for a tour, he doesn’t use a pick – Eric uses a pick – so a lot of people were whining about that! (laughs) “

One Hot Minute, marked a significant chapter in the band’s history. It is band’s only record featuring guitarist Dave Navarro as a full-time member. It showcased a departure from their earlier sound but they still retained the band’s distinctive edge. Jane’s Addiction are popular for their fusion of rock, punk, and funk, but on this album they took a darker, more introspective turn.

Tracks like “Been Caught Stealing” and “Mountain Song” gave way to more complex, moody compositions such as “Just Because” and “Three Days”. The album’s lead single, “Been Caught Stealing,” combined Navarro’s heavy, layered guitar work with Perry Farrell’s haunting vocals. It created a new sound that was both chaotic and cohesive. Songs like “Ain’t No Right” and “Pigs in Zen” also highlighted the band’s willingness to experiment with both lyrical content and musical structure.

Though the album that an innovative approach, One Hot Minute garnered mixed reviews from critics and didn’t achieve the commercial success of the band’s previous efforts.
