Update: Jill Vedder has written on Instagram: “Beautiful rendition of Long Road with the Soweto Choir dedicated to Mandela and Eds brother (my brother in law) Chris.”

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performed in Africa at the Global Citizens Festival: Mandela 100 show, and he paid tribute to his brother Chris. Before performing “Long Road”, he said the performance would be a ‘bit of a prayer.’ He then said the performance was for his ‘brother’ Chris and Nelson Mandela.

Long Road lyrics:
And I wished for so long cannot stay.
All the precious moments cannot stay.
It’s not like wings have fallen cannot stay.
But still something’s missing cannot say.
Holding hands of daughters and sons,
And their faiths are falling down.
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today.
Will I walk the long road? Cannot stay
There’s no need to say goodbye
All the friends and family.
All the memories going round.
I have wished for so long.
How I wish for you today.
And the wind keeps rollin’,
And the sky keeps turning gray.
And the sun is set
The sun will rise another day.
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today.
I have wished for so long
How I wish for you today.
Will I walk the long road?
We all walk the long road

Vedder said at a 2017 show about Chris Cornell (not his brother Chris), “I want to be there for the family, be there for the community, be there for my brothers in my band, certainly the brothers in his band. But these things will take time, but my friend is going to be gone forever and I will just have to … These things take time and I just want to send this out to everyone who was affected by it, and they all back home and here appreciate it so deeply, the support and the good thoughts of a man who was a … you know he wasn’t just a friend, he was someone I looked up to like my older brother.”
